Default 'Thor' and 'Star Wars' Mark a Dramatic Surge in Blu-ray Sales

Physical media was also up for the first time in a while thanks to the pair of releases.

Physical ownership forever for me. Even if they somehow manage to match blu ray's PQ & AQ via streaming I still want something in my hands for my money. No DRM or any other wacky restrictions.

I'm planning to give at least 2 or 3 blu ray players as gifts this holiday season. I must spread the glory that is Blu Ray.

amen HDD brotha, lol. That's awesome that your giving blu players as gifts...you are a good friend/son to have indeed.

I agree about physical ownership. I have to own it...but I dont mind downloads as a way to rent movie. I rent now (more than I ever have in the past) off iTunes and watch the rentals on my Mac/iPad and I am hooked.

So sad that the massive sales of Star Wars will only encourage George in all his tinkering. People who visit sites like this can complain all they want, but in the end your average fan will speak with his/her wallet, probably not even knowing about all the changes, and the tinkerers will only keep on tinkering.

oooorrrrrr, it could make him release the original version of Star Wars knowing he will make additional money.
You better call Kenny Loggins. 'Cause you in the DANGER ZONE!

I agree with the above posts whole-heartedly!

I love seeing my collection on my shelves as opposed o a hard drive.

Additionally, call me materialistic if you will, but I enjoy when friends or family come over and are overwhelmed at my catalog of titles.

My wife hates it when I come home with more movies but she does think it is pretty cool seeing the collection in our home theatre room. Contradictory I know but that is a typical wife/girlfriend I suppose.

I bought Star Wars on release day and it sits with about half of my collection un-opened, but when I want to watch it I know it is there and I don't have to wait for a download or compromise audio/video quality.

Haha, yeah one can always hope but I wouldn't hold my breath.

Orrr, he might release the originals without the additions/changes, but just tint them green ;-)

Omg this is it! This means... uummm.... ah well, nothing really besides SW sells, but that has been well known since 1976/1977. Nice while it lasted though.

There's no DRM on Blu-ray? Wrong.

People think this is their only chance to get the film - Ironically, the newspaper mentioned the Spiketv awards and when the award was presented to Darth Vader as best villain he warned us all about George's digital tinkering.

SlySoft AnyDVD HD effectively renders Blu-ray's DRM a moot point.

Well said. Nothing, NOTHING can ever replace physical ownership of the movies we all love. Or the feeling it creates (pride, happiness, embarrassment?) at the sight of my ever expanding collection. Packaged media sales may be on the decline, but even IF streaming matched the quality and fidelity of Blu-ray, though unlikely, I know that I can instantly watch movies from my personal collection, anytime on my time, at my choosing.

While this news is not surprising, considering it is SW after all, it could be considered an inflection point for the format if BD sales continue rising. Hopefully we'll see more catalog titles released on blu.

I'm at the point where I weigh the quality, price, convenience and importance of a title and then decide on physical or streaming.

I bought Fringe Season 3 from Amazon's Instant Video store. Worked out quite nicely as I was able to catch episodes at home and at the office. The HD quality was fairly decent and I do like the convenience.

But something like Star Wars? Yeah, gotta have the disc.
