Default 'The Count of Monte Cristo' - High-Def Digest Review

Our review of 'The Count of Monte Cristo' has just been posted. Steven Cohen says this is a pretty basic but entertaining adaptation of the classic novel. This Blu-ray features uneven video, solid audio, and a few interesting supplements. Worth a look.

after the gap between tombstone and armageddon to this and o brother, can we expect a similar lack of live action non-kiddy oriented fare before we get the next wave?

I simply hate that flick! ...Everything is lame about it; the story, the acting, and the overall 'feel'.

It's a fantastic book! One of my favorites.

I love this adaptation. My personal favorite. It's spectacular what they were able to do with such a large source and small time frame. I've watched a few attempts at this book, and the story itself just lends itself to be cut up. It works.

I like the semi larger focus on his prison stay. Something that the French Miniseries basically skips over.

    I'm sure it'll get a 3D version soon.

This movie was crap. It completely bastardized the motives for Edmund, they turned Albert into his son, and most importantly, THEY FORGOT HAYDEE!!!

    So?

Also, his motives are intact. They didn't change that. The core of the novel is intact. There's no way to make the film without altering it. It's too big of a text to do a literal adaptation. Besides, the beauty of adaptations is to see how another handles the reigns. This is a great version of the film, that certainly acts as a brilliant way for newcomers to find Dumas.

Of course, the novel will always remain the true and preferred version. But, that does not mean others cannot live next to it. The heart of the novel is intact. The director and writer merely gave the audience a happier resolution. Nothing wrong with that. Especially, since they made it work.

The modern translation from Robin Buss is 1350 some odd pages. That's a big book.

Agree. It's a fun film. I watched it many times when it came out on DVD.

Yeah, and ALbert is NOT Edmund's son. The timing is impossible. Albert was born 10 years after Edmund was sent to prison. I don't expect a 100% accurate adaptation, but I expect them to at least get the characters right.

Hey, you should be thankful. You're fluent in French. You are able to read and therefore fully appreciate and understand Alexandre Dumas' hard work in its original language! I'm sure a lot of HDD-readers would give an arm and a leg for that opportunity.

In this film, Albert was born 9 months after Edmund was sent to prison.

I really enjoy this adaption and love the movie. It's got good pacing, captures the spirit of the novel, and makes us cheer for the Dantes character.

I'm on the fence, however, as far as replacing my DVD copy right away. A shame about the mediocre PQ, since it means I'll have to wait longer than expected for the price to drop to a justifiable level.
