Caught this on Netflix tonight, and I fully agree with your assessment. It's an awesome premise and I expected them to go darker than they did with it (as I understand the novel does). Would love to see the concept explored more fully in the future.

And while the reviewer's critical points are all fairly valid, I still think it'll go over well with the general public (as the comments here show).

I liked this and watched both the UNRATED and Theatrical cuts... I enjoy the hell out of this movie, but yes it has flaws. However... what movie doesn't have flaws. See below

    Spoiler:
I do like the re-cut ending though. The alternate ending was kind of meh, but the new ending almost makes you feel as if he found a way to control the effects of the drug or his lab produced a better version of it.

If they wouldn't have mentioned DeNiro's people shutting down his lab... you could have almost assumed he found a way to keep the himself in the drug state... without being on it anymore.

It s just that one scene with that dialog that makes you know he is still using it... it would have been cooler if in the time between getting out the situation with the russian, and the time he is running for office he learned to master and control all the good things the drug does without taking it...

    my 2 cents anyway

    My take on the ending:
    Spoiler:
He did set about solving the problems of improving the drug, etc. (I kept asking, "Why doesn't he do that?" throughout the whole film), and he is off the drug at the end. With limitless knowledge, he found a way to stay that way and no longer be at the mercy of the pills. Otherwise, the GF wouldn't have stuck around.

That was my original take until I watched the Alt ending and then re-watched the film again and re-heard DeNiro's line.

I guess I should have stayed away from the Alternate ending.

1408 was another film with multiple endings that I wished I never watched because it ruined the ending attached to the HD DVD release. I thought some of the alternates were way better. Whereas the re-cut ending of Limitless was better, I just wished they would have re-worked DeNiro's line about the labs.
