Nate Boss has just turned in the most thorough review available anywhere for 'The Lord of the Rings: The Motion Picture Trilogy - Extended Editions.' You have to read this from start to finish, but here's a spoiler, this set is a MUST OWN Blu-ray release.

To cancel or not to cancel, that is the question.

Must Own means you MUST own it. Sheesh. Reading comprehension not your strong suit?

I already own the EE on DVD, and the PQ is very good on it, so I would need a near perfect disk to make me justify a repurchase the set, and everything I've heard thus far hasn't lead me to that conclusion. Has little to do with reading comprehension, I read fine, but thanks.

I just cant justify buying 15 discs...
I wouldnt even mind the fact that the movies are on 2 discs if they were just able to get all the special features on blu rays and not dvds.

Jesus Christ, next time click the little link that says Spoiler. sar-cas-m. Do you really think I would tell someone that a Must Own recommendation means that they are in some way legally bound to purchase a product?

    Spoiler:
Ironic since you just claimed reading comprehension wasn't an issue. LOL.

Anyway I skipped to the Fellowship/green tint portion of the review, and it does absolutely nothing to comfort me. Nate says it's not distracting, and then mentions things that I am sure I would find completely off-putting. Green dresses, blue teeth, green this, green that. It sounds like a nightmare.

I just don't understand why they would tinker with it in such a manner when everything else sounds fantastic.

I will buy this anyway because I've been impatiently waiting 5 years for it, but I really wish I could see into the future to determine whether they will issue another remaster or fix for the green bullshit in the next few years. That would make my decision a little bit easier.

Edit: Also, the fact that they didn't bother remastering the other two discs because nobody bitched about them just screams total fucking laziness to me. Special features on DVD?? Each movie still split amongst 2 BDs?

I have trouble believing you couldn't fit these movies in all their splendor on a BD-50 a piece. It's not about getting up to switch discs or my ability to sit through the entire 4-hour spectacle each time without a break... it's just about aesthetics. It's about the implied promise of Blu-ray, this new(ish) format that's so mighty it releases video games that are 3 DVDs on Xbox 360 as one Blu-ray on PS3 (LA Noire).

One BD-50 for each movie, one BD-50 for each movie's special features, even if they had to be in SD. That's how this movie should have been delivered, in a small, elegant case. Efficient. Smart. Clean. That's Blu-ray, to me. Being able to fit "everything on one disc" was touted as one of the big selling points. 15 discs is EXTREME, even for a release like this.

I guess I'm just frustrated that this trilogy once again didn't get the red carpet treatment. It should have been totally remastered to reference quality (source material permitting) for posterity as one of the greatest achievements in cinema history, not with cut corners because J6P will buy it anyway. You'd figure that PJ, as proud as he is of his baby, would have taken the initiative to do everything in his considerable power to make sure this is the One Release to Rule Them All. I guess it still is the best it's been, but by the sounds of it, it could have been better.

I'll buy it tomorrow and I'm sure I'll be happy with it, but there will always be a little voice in the back of my head telling me to expect a 15th-anniversary QUINTUPLE DIP, pointing out green hues or swearing under it's breath about 10 DVDs (yes DVDs) of bonus features, that I already have owned for half a decade.

/RANT OFF, sorry, just had to get it all out there.

Apparently the UK version doesn't have the "green tint," and is region free. I might pick up that version instead.

One hell of a review by Nate! I really salute him for the time he took on this release. It really is a shame to have the controversy on FOTR EE BD. One of the biggest ever BD releases, and we should have had a hands down, slam dunk release.

i'll see if i can get my hands on it for a comparison. chances are, though, those people saying it doesn't don't notice it. i HIGHLY doubt they'd use different sources here. if they did, then chances are Fellowship would be the old DNR-fest. it's a lose-lose situation.

also, to reply to a facebook post (don't have FB so i can't hop in there): there is no word for wanting the films to be on one disc, other than foolishness. lossless audio. 4 commentary tracks (each with a subtitle track optional for who is talking to pop up). 4 to 5 hours of film each. bd-live. game trailer. easter egg. menu programming (which is REALLY good, folks!). to want all that on a BD50 is like saying "gee, i care more about not getting up than i do about picture and audio quality!"

2 BD50's was the way to go. it is the same as the DVDs were (2 discs, maxed out space). to freak out about that is ignorant. blu-ray does NOT mean never having to change discs. it means HIGH QUALITY...where applicable.
