What an awesome review. The time and effort took to bring it to us shows. I'd have died a slow death doing what the reviewer has done and not appriciated the film doing it, so Kudos and thanks for an excellent review.
I'd like to add my agreement to Godstars opinion on this epic thread. Anything short of perfection for this release is a kick in the teeth in my opinion, it just goes to show how little care/input Peter Jackson has had in the release of the blu-ray editions IMHO.
To be completely honest, its a crying shame, and a real pity. I was so much looking forward to seeing this superb movie in a format and cut which it deserved. Sadly it looks like this will never happen now.

Um, no matter what, this set is superior to the EE DVDs.

when they did that they added the Costa Botes docs. what would they add this time?
i doubt we'll see it, honestly, since WB keeps wanting to make FOTR/FOTG the odd duck in the series. if we do, it will be to tie in with the 2 hobbit films on home video in a mega release. 37 discs or bust.Nate Boss

I watched FOTR last night. Yes, it has some green-ness to it. Yes, it should probably have looked different. Yes, I forgot the green-ness within about 10 minutes as the fireworks scene rumbled my cinema room and the detail in the image smacked me in the fact and called me Stacy.
Bloody gorgeous movie, green tinted or not. Consider me blown away. -

I know I'm late to the party and not sure if anyone is even looking at this bloated thread anymore, but I finally got my copy yesterday. I purchased from Amazon last weekend and it was being sold through a third party and "fulfilled by Amazon" (apparently Amazon was out of stock at the time I placed my order). The copy I received was distributed through Alliance Films and appears to be the Canadian version. The packaging is slightly different with a very small French translation right beneath the titles on the front of the box and along the spine. The BD cases are black, unlike the blue ones in Europe and the discs themselves are also labeled slightly different (the Alliance logo is stamped all over the place on the whole set).
I don't mind the different packaging as it is kind of unique but my biggest gripe is that there are FIVE forced trailers at the front of each film. They have to be skipped through one at a time and it is very frustrating. I am pretty sure the American release does not have any trailers. Can anyone concur?
The transfer appears to be the same, as is the audio. I watched a little bit of Fellowship last night and I am pleased to say that although the picture is slightly darker (less bright is probably a better way to describe it), it sure as hell didn't look green to me. I paused the film on a nice shot of the sky in the opening Shire sequence and it looked blue. I realize that if I loaded up the DVD and paused on the same shot and switched back and forth, I would probably see the difference but my point is, in the context of simply watching the film in HD, the new color timing does not bother me at all.
I am watching on a 50 inch Panny Plasma that I calibrated myself and damn.....this film looks simply gorgeous. There is a light layer of grain that definitely gives it a feeling of film and I am VERY happy with my decision to go ahead and upgrade to this set.
With Star Wars and the LOTR EE finally on my shelf, I am a happy Blu-ray collector.Last edited by DSquared; 09-29-2011 at 05:30 PM.

Well, I can't believe that I read through every post in this humongous thread (over a few days) and there was a lot of needless squabbling and repetition, but I kept going hoping for there to be an announcement of a way to replace disc(s) or confirmation of whether Peter Jackson actually only approved the colours of the HD broadcast (and theatre screening) or if he saw the green and darkness of the Blu-Ray.
Sadly, there was neither, and now I wish that I hadn't actually read this thread and just enjoyed the EE BD set I just ordered (for $45 on sale from amazon.ca) without any knowledge that it is more green and dark than it "should" be and there's nothing I can do about it (short of returning it, which I don't want to do because I've never owned any of the LOTR movies and was waiting for this "definitive" set to come out). Oh, and I'm going to have to sit through forced trailers too since I'll probably get the Canadian Alliance version. Well, I guess I can't expect everything to be perfect. :-/Last edited by pedram; 10-12-2011 at 09:06 PM.

I applaud you for taking the time to read our bickering and laboring on!
Sadly, this is just proof that if you ignore something, it goes away. If you acknowledge it, there will be no end to it. See: Green tint, calls or a recall.Nate Boss

Yeah, it's a real shame that they just swept it under the carpet and it basically blew over and they got away with it, so to speak. I guess we may never know if PJ actually approved the green tint in the Blu-Ray, unless someone specifically brings it up in an interview or something
I'm not sure what you meant by "See: Green tint, calls or a recall" though, since I did a search for that term and didn't find anything matching that. Closest thing I found was something about a Sony TV recall because of a "green blob". Is that what you meant? -

no. what i mean is if new line/warner acknowledged the green tint, or if PJ said "my god, that is ghastly!," then they'd be forced to do something about it. typo in post should say calls For a recall, that F is important. the calls sure did quiet down in this thread, and it lay dormant. people just moved on. forgotten, NEXT up, so on.

Ah, I see. Well it was a good pipe dream while it lasted.
And who knows, maybe they'll do something about it for the super duper hairy feet second breakfast edition re-release sometime down the line (e.g. as a complete Tolkien set when The Hobbit comes out on Blu-Ray). -
