Buzz on both movies was exceedingly negative, and both received poor reviews, the 'Discovery' for being cheesy and poorly-written, and Scott's movie for being far too long and deadly boring. It took me about three attempts to make it all the way through '1492' on VHS back in the day.

I wouldn't call 1492 boring, but it depends if the subject matter interests you. I know there are movies I find boring that other people don't, the critics didn't like either Columbus films that is true they panned them. So would you ever give 1492 another try if it was released on Blu-ray? you saw it on freaking VHS.
It was played on cable, released on VHS, LD but I really don't think many people in the USA have ever really seen this film. -

A 'normal' run for LD's back-in-the-day was 1000.
So, I know for a fact it didn't sell more copies then were pressed!
The French looks, too me, too have been stuck w/the Teal stick....they are the same damn movies...

White Squall was a big box office dud like 1492 and that has seen a DVD and now Blu-ray release in the USA. There is no excuse for 1492 to never see a DVD or Blu release in the USA, if there is some kind of rights issue sort it the hell out it has been like 16 years now or so since DVD launched and now Blu-ray is DVD on steroids.
I didn't know only 1,000 copies of the 1492 LD was pressed, interesting. The France Blu-ray looks solid but yeah something better could be done and should.
At the very least you'd find something to entertain you, VHS is just awful man.
