    There is something about this premise I just found appalling non-dramatic.. not sure specifically why but -- it's a train on a track.. it's not like they don't know where it's going - just seems there should be a dozen relativity simple ways to slow it down or stop it.

    Well, supposedly it's inspired by true events, but I agree that there should be some kind of measures in place to stop speeding trains out of control. And if not, then that's damn scary.

    I also don't know if the events depicted in that movie are possible or if an obvious way to shut down the train is available but ignored for dramatic effect.
    Spoiler:
    I also understood that at least two trained people were to be on any powered train at all times, at least one in the train engine car, maybe two, and at least one in the caboose. If such blatant violations of standard operating procedures can create the disaster then maybe the movie was plausible.
    Maybe a railroad engineer can explain why something like this could happen or why it could not.
