How do you cancel it a month before release? Surely the mastering, etc would have been done by now. Must be legal trouble and that means money.

Probably The Same Reason As The Initial Video Release In 1996
i would guess that the music rights were only done for the release on video & dvd but there were probably money issues when it came to the music in a 5.1 form.
it took forever for the VHS to come out because of that issue even with the sound track,as it went out of print until the video launched.Sony KDL-52EX700
Denon AVR 791
Sony BDP-CX 960 {x2}
Polk Audio TSi 300 Mains
Polk Audio CS 10 Center
Polk Audio TSi 200 Surrounds

Based upon prior legal matters concerning purchasing the copyright license of the Heavy Metal soundtrack from various recording artists, for VHS, and DVD, have resulted inordinate extended delays of releasing the movie on home video. There may be a possibility, Sony is currently experiencing the exact dilemma with the Blu-ray release as well, which didn't include the Blu-ray format, when negotiations for the copyrights were in progress, and settled previously.

Jetpacksam and Slimdude - both with the same speculation and yes I do think the laserdisc had the same issue, so my original comment about a legal issue, ultimately money would quickly sum it up.

Okay, we can all calm down a bit--Heavy Metal will be released on February 1st (a Tuesday) but now as a Best Buy exclusive! Looks like it can be pre-ordered for $16.99 right now (may go on-sale in-store). Thanks to Blu Ray.com for the info!

I pre-ordered as soon as I found out about the Best Buy listing.At $16.99 with free shipping it doesn't sound bad to me and I'm glad I won't have to pay international shipping rates from Amazon.de.

I have never owned this in any format. I guess I am making a trip to BB on 2/1 to pick up Heavy Metal, Almost Famous and Out of Sight.

This movie is incredibly dear to me. In my formative years, getting baked (and this is when getting baked meant getting BAKED) and watching Heavy Metal was an utterly engrossing experience. I love the soundtrack too, it will be nice to hear it in all it's HD glory.

I own the set, HM & HM2000, on DVD and have for some years now. I enjoy pulling them out for friends around my age and watch them plop on the couch and floor to watch. Although the floor is getting a bit low for them these days, oh well that's their problem.

I'll be curious if it's worth double dipping as I've done with some 70's movies, like THX1138. Well looking forward to this release and maybe getting a few bucks off of list.
Cheers
