'The Karate Kid (2010)' - High-Def Digest Review

I went into this movie with low expectations and I ended up enjoying the movie. Definitely prefer the original, but I thought the movie was pretty good. Watched it with my 5 year old son and he enjoyed it too.

I wasn't expecting much from this remake.When it was over I was totall hooked. Jaden Smith really reminded me of a little Will Smith with his snappy lines and attitude. What really impressed me was his level of commitment. This kid -all of them really - went above and beyond with there level of training and stunt work. These kids were doing things most grown-up action stars won't do. They came off almost like miniature versions of Jackie Chan's stunt group.

And Jaden Smith was getting his ass beat every which way possible. Way more than Ralph Macchio in the original.

The locale, action sequences and cast really put this a cut bove the standard remake (no comparison as to which is the better remake between this and Clash of the Titans). I'm down for the sequel.

Well let's unbreak it.

1. I have nothing against Jaden Smith as an actor (never seen him before this movie) except the fact that he grates in this movie as a little know it all with his oh so clever comments and pretentious attitude. I'm sure another actor could have brought a little more grit, decorum and modesty to the role which may have made the movie bearable in this department and more in fitting with the art of kung fu/karate taht is supposed to be portrayed.

2. Don't make assumptions to where i've been and what I know of other cultures. I'm European and have travelled Europe and Asia extensively including China. The location is chessy because it bears no relation to the real China where 99.9% of the population struggle to make ends meet under a sometimes oppressive regime.Maybe Trey Parkers China is your China too. Putting in some breathtaking location shots makes it all real for some as if it was filmed by the Chinese Tourist Agency.
As you obviously have been to China too then tell me how it all stacks up??

3. You tell me what was good about the acting. Jackie Chan was good but who else? Mostly sterotype acting from the rest.The well meaning Mom, the girl to be won over or the big bad Chinese kids with the stone hard instructor doing his Rocky inspired Drago impression. Good?? Are you serious??

4. Yes indeed fast forwarding helped judge in this case and probably helped me not to give the movie even more of a pasting.

1. Ok. I have nothing to say since I strongly disagree with you.
2. So when you meant "cheesy," you meant "unrealistic"? Sure, why not? It's a movie but I thought what the movie did show opened the eyes for the American audience of other cultures in the world.
3. The entire cast was great. It's supposed to be an underdog story and we usually have cliched characters, but that doesn't make them bad.

I enjoyed it more than I thought I would. I'd go 7/10, on par with the original, for entertainment value.
