Huh, don't know anything about this series, does anyone else?

Been through the old Jeremy Brett series, wife could really like this if it's decent.

    full screen aspect ratio, huh?

I've watched the first 2 eps of the series so far and it's a very good updating of the holmes story with
holmes using stuff like texting etc in modern times.

I would say wait to order this. The U.K. release is due out on Tuesday and if it's Region-A Compatible then you should order that version. Comes to $28 CAD / $26 USD when all said and done.

Loved every minute of this very short series. Really thought this was going to fail, but the the acting and the scripts have blown me away. Cannot wait for future episodes of this gem and a day one purchase for me on blu.

I really enjoyed this and looked great in HD. It's 16:9 btw.

But DD2.0? WTF?! I'm pretty sure the series was broadcast in 5.1, and even if it wasn't they should not be using DD. Jesus, when will the BBC get their act together on this.

I'm so annoyed about this I'm going to reply again. The unaired pilot alone for this series cost 800,000 pounds to make. That is of liscen payers (AKA TV tax payers) money. They would spend all that on a pilot that is not shown on TV, but won't pay for a 5.1 mix and won't even use a lossless codec on the stereo?

    Shameful. Utterly shameful.

Some DVDs even had PCM stereo! It is ridiculous any blu rays with a stereo soundtrack come out in Dolby Digital.

I noticed that. If it follows suit to recent similar releases, it will likely be compatible, but may be in 1080i 50hz, which limits the players it will play on in the states (most Samsung will work but Sonys won't)

Has anyone in the UK picked this up? I saw the DVD for sale last night and it had a DD 5.1 soundtrack listed on the box - not DD 2.0 as stated in the press release, but I couldn't see the BD for sale. What is the sound on the BD?

    Spader,

bug me if I don't reply to you to confirm, but I think it is a 5 channel mix (the UK discs). We happen to have the Sammy that will play BBC discs hooked up directly to a TV upstairs at the moment (no receiver in that room), so I'll need to check the player readout for you.

The new series is a some what faithful updating of the first 2 Sherlock Holmes stories. The young man playing Holmes is brilliant, Watson, possibly the new Bilbo Baggins (The Hobbit) is very good as well.
I thought Mycroft Holmes, played by one of the shows producers, should have been closer to the way Doyle described him, more Nero Wolfe in size, stature and attitude.

It really is a fresh take on Holmes and not a bad bit of updating IMHO. It was far more refreshing than the Movie with Robert Downey Jr, not a very good take on the Doyle characters, fun but more of Bond movie than Holmes.

I hope they make a second and third series. Although The young man playing Holmes would have been a better choice for the 11th Doctor, maybe the 12th if rumors of Smith leaving after series 6 are true.

Bottom line I like this series enough to picking up on blu sometime soon, either the US or UK depending which is a better release. The unaired pilot may be worth it alone.

Thanks! Were you able to check this? I can't find info anywhere on what format the sound is. Hopefully it's uncompressed 5.1!

I just checked my copy of the UK Sherlock and the back does say Dolby Digital 5.1, though it does say all special features (inc. the pilot I assume) is Dolby Stereo.
