This is something I'm worried about for their catalogue releases, as Casablanca did just have a DD track. I'm hoping this was just because they had done this for the HD DVD release and the BD was just a straight port, and future releases with a mono release will be uncompressed, but a lot of mono, and stereo, releases are still coming out DD when there is really no need.

While Treasure of Sierra Madre was an all time great, I found Maltese Falcon to be overrated. Hopefully others will enjoy it more than me.

Day 1 buy for me.
No UK/EU release noted, so I'll happily get it from the US.
Keep it up Warners and we'll buy.
One caveat - if Warners keep NOT releasing classics in the UK then we'll buy from the US and they'll have a self-fulfilling 'UK-no-buy-classics' prophesy. -

Wonderful news; have been waiting for these and hope they do a solid restoration for BR. Just rewatched the "Casablanca" BR for the 4th or 5th time last week, and the quality of that release just brings tears to my eyes. Silky.
With a full-size Maltese Falcon statue next to whichever TV I've used (now a 1080p of course) the last 20 years, I'm sort of into it.....

Review and screen captures, Maltese Falcon:

Like on Sierra Madre WB has increased the contrast on MF, assuming the images are accurate and I think they are. I wish WB would at least clamp the higher values when doing so to prevent blowouts that happen on things like the lamps like in images 3 & 4 where film grain is brightened away. Not to mention that thing on the woman's blouse on image 4 and Bogart's forehead in image 4x.
In the SD screen captures those areas clearly have detail. Clamping tools are standard on compositing programs like Shake and EyeOn Fusion so I imagine whatever software WB is using has it as well. -

greenman don't you think it's kind of an insult to HDD to post dvdbeaver's reviews on their forums?

Wait, out of all of the movies they do a digibook to, they aren't with this one?????????

Not unless HDD has a severe insecurity complex

DVDBeaver provides screenshots, which HDD does not. While not everyone agrees on the usefulness of screenshots, they do provide at least an initial look at the disc and the site provides the stats.
Personally, I always check out the DVDBeaver reviews for the screenshots and initial impressions b/c they post stuff fastest usually. But, I give more weight to the reviews here b/c they are more thorough and better explained. -

well actually he wasn't even on here during the "Great Link Debate", which was that magical time when users were suddenly asked to not post reviews from other sites--specifically dvdbeaver and blu-ray.com--in threads of films that were most likely to get an HDD review.
I stopped posting any reviews in the domestic area, but still post an occasional one in the import area because the mods/reviewers basically agreed that posting reviews for films that would never get reviewed on HDD--which basically means 99% of import titles--was acceptable.
of course, it is no secret that forum participation has fallen off a cliff in the last few months, so who knows what everyone is thinking at present.
I think the general consensus is probably to still NOT post review links for films that are likely to receive a review on HDD.
but I don't think anyone that has done this without knowing about all of the past hullaballoo should be castigated.
imo it's up to the mods to make people aware of any rules they may be breaking.
so if they aren't concerned then I don't think anyone else should be either.
just my 2 cents. -

yup. no DB for The Treasure of Sierra Madre either. sad, and it sucks, but the good news is that they're priced at what DBs are usually on a great sale as, so it kind of makes up for it.
i almost always check out their reviews for the screenshots as well but i don't post their reviews here.
anywhoo, it's not really a big deal i guess, but i like to think that we all are fully aware of cinemasquid and its greatness.
