Default Suspiria (UK) January 18th 2010

Well it is absolutely fantastic to see Argento's masterpiece getting its UK release on ...
Even better news is that this is taken from a completely different master to the Italian Eagle version. Throw in a long list of extras and you may wonder if this could be a definitive edition?
Whatever, I am picking this up on Day One.

    http://screeningroom.blogs.cnn.com/2...s-5-favorites/

"Dario Argento’s horror classic SUSPIRIA comes to DVD and, for the first time ever, Blu-ray in January 2010 having undergone a brand new high definition transfer courtesy of Nouveaux Pictures and Cine-Excess. Digitally remastered from HD, this brand new presentation has already led critics to claim, "Suspiria has never looked better. It has never sounded as good, either." (John Millar, Film Critic, Sunday Mail) and to hail it as "a stunning makeover for one of the greatest horror films ever made." (David Edwards, Daily Mirror).

Both formats also come with a host of newly commissioned extras including a brand new documentary featuring director Dario Argento and composer Claudio Simonetti and a feature length audio commentary by Argento experts Alan Jones and Kim Newman.

Inspired by Thomas De Quincey's Suspiria de Profundis and co-written by Argento and his long-term partner Daria Nicolodi, SUSPIRIA is Argento's undisputed masterpiece of Grand Guignol horror, hitting new peaks of terror through its stunning photography (courtesy of Luciano Tovoli), eye-popping production design and terrifying atmosphere of dread and death.

Suzy Bannion (Jessica Harper) is an American ballet student, travelling to Germany to study at an exclusive dance academy in the Black Forest. After one of the students and her friend are hideously murdered in the first of Argento's breath-catching set-piece killings, Suzy discovers that the academy has a bizarre history and, as the body count rises, she gets involved in a hideous labyrinth of murder, black magic and madness.

Utilising complex lighting systems, intense film processing techniques, wire-guided cameras and multi-layer music recording (highlighting a superb Goblin score), Argento paints a masterpiece of terror on a technically impeccable canvas.

SUSPIRIA (cert. 18) will be released on DVD (£tbc) and Blu-ray (£tbc) by Nouveaux Pictures on 18th January 2010. Special Features include: "Fear At 400 Degrees: The Cine-Excess Of Suspiria" documentary featuring director Dario Agento and composer Claudio Simonetti; audio commentary by leading Dario Argento experts Alan Jones and Kim Newman; "Suspiria Perspectives" featuring Claudio Simonetti, Norman J. Warren and Patricia McCormack."

well I thought that the Italian version was also based on the restored elements, but I guess there could be different color timing that would make it better since that seem to the main problem some people had with the Italian version.
of course having English subs will be nice.

I'll of course pick this one up too Hopefully it fixes the overblown contrast issues that are in the Italian release and of course English audio is very welcome. Hopefully it's indeed a definitive version.

    I thought that you might....
Early signs on this look very good. The transfer and restoration have been carried out by enthusiasts who seem to really care about the end result.
Check out the Nouveaux Pictures trailer for the DVD on Youtube:

I read somewhere that this was a rare UK uncut print that was used too...

Yeah, I'm quite happy to buy this one multiple times as long as the releases have some proper improvements or additional extras. I didn't think the Italian release was too bad either after I added English audio to it but the color contrast issues were a clear imperfection though. They affected only a couple of scenes really badly though. Nice to know that this is a new and different transfer

Getting goosebumps again from the music when watching the trailer

There seems to be some disquiet about the artwork and the logo for Cine Excess, in particular their "Taking Trash Seriously" tag...

Of much more interest (well at least to me) are comments about the master like:
"It's looking likely that this is an entirely new transfer, as Xavier Mendik is involved, and what is supposed to be the master for this release was screened recently and it supposedly looked amazing."
Now this just raises my interest level (and expectations) all the more...

And according to one reviewer on the cult-labs forums we could well be in for something really good too:

"Well I looked at the comparison shots and test footage sent over some weeks back from the company working on the film and it looks stunning - so much so you'd swear it had been shot yesterday."

"I've yet to see the whole thing - there are discs in the office but if it all turns out as well as the tests I was given to review it'll be something special."

    Someone asks the question:
" Almar, is it looking better than the ropey Italian BD release? Can't wait for this!"

" From what I saw... it looked great."

God dammit, I am going to be counting down now until January the 18th!

Hopefully it lives up to the high hopes

I'd love to get Tenebrae, Opera, Deep Red, Phenomena etc. on BD sometime too, those are among my favorites from Argento's best period.

My first version of Suspiria was a UK VHS tape I bought on some inter-rail trip (came back with a bag full of mainly horror tapes from UK and Holland) I think it was a bit cut version though at the time. At that time importing had to be basically done manually. Finland was very bad with horror movie releases back then so everything good had to be imported.

Apparently so good is this upcoming transfer that just seeing it compels you to go out and buy a player

"Actually we had a journalist come watch it in the office - as soon as he was done he went out and bought a Blu-ray player - no lie!"

Yes I did exactly the same once I discovered the lack of English anything on the Italian release.
As I said before, just counting the days for this to be released and early indications are that the transfer is very good. Can't wait.
