Battleship Potemkin is currently the oldest movie released on Blu-ray (release date in e.g. Sweden and Finland was 28th of October).
I received this today from Finland (from filmifriikki.fi). I paid 17.13€ for the disc after VAT reduction and 5.80€ for shipping (together with Passchendaele, another AtlanticFilm release). Filmifriikki hasn't indicated this being in stock so far, instead they've indicated 2-4 weeks delivery time from the beginning, but they shipped mine last Saturday, one day after I placed the order. Shop links: http://www.filmifriikki.fi/product.p...product=701772 http://english.megastore.se/template...itemid=2130331 Case pics: ![]() ![]() ![]() These covers are the Finnish version, there's also a Swedish version and perhaps Norwegian and Danish versions. The back cover says that this is the first time this movie is being released as digitally restored version on Blu-ray and DVD. The movie is encoded in 1080i50 AVC. Audio language is Silent / Russian and subtitles are in Finnish, Norwegian, Swedish and Danish. It's a silent film with music and with textual explanations apparing every now and then, lack of English subs might not be a too big problem if one knows the movie already. I haven't seen the film ever before myself. The disc is region free, but requires a playback environment that works with 50hz / 25 fps content. Extras: A documentary about the film's history (lots of different versions exist) and the restoration in German + some Russian with subtitles in the same Nordic languages, 42m:20s. Presented in HD, 1080i50 MPEG-2, 1.33:1. Not English friendly. This is found in the pop-up menu only, not mentioned in the back cover at all. The documentary seems very informative regarding the history of the film and on how and why many different versions were made. BD info scan: Code:

I haven't yet watched the movie in full, but I think the PQ is pretty good for a film that's 84 years old, good clarity and detail but quite many scratches etc. in the image.
Apparently this restoration was done by Deutsche Kinemathek Museum für Film und Fernsehen, whose logo appears before the movie and on the case. I believe they've done a meticulous job and used the best film elements that could be acquired. |

shame the disc lacks English subtitles. I'd love to have the title on BD.

Yeah, they could have probably sold plenty more if they included English subs too. Maybe some other studios will release it on BD as well sooner or later.

it will undoubtedly come out later across the world.
They most likely didn't include English subs due to contactual obligations. I'm sure the other distributors will get the same restored elements, and do their own thing to them. Kino has the rights in the US. They are probably already working on it since it is such a seminal film. ![]() thanks Kannisto for the screenshots-- they look amazing for this film. wow! |
