Default Rööperi (Hellsinki) (Nordisk Film - Finland)

Got Rööperi from Finland yesterday. It was released there on 23rd of October. It's advertised as the year's most watched Finnish movie. The international English title is Hellsinki. The BD release is region free and has English subs. The movie has received quite positive reviews in Finland, it's fairly dark and has excellent performances by the main cast.

This movie is based on some real characters and events in 1960's and 70's Finland, in an area of Helsinki called "Punavuori", a.k.a Rööperi (a nickname derived from the area's Swedish name "Rödbergen") i.e. Red Hill. A group of criminals starts taking over the black market of booze etc. in Helsinki area and starts making a lot of money out of it, and there are many confrontations etc.

Very solid looking PQ, but audio is only DD 5.1 (640 kbps) in original Finnish. I'm not sure why they put a DTS-HD MA label on the disc art, but at least the back cover has the correct audio specs. I sampled the first half an hour yesterday and it seemed very good and interesting, looking forward to watching it in whole.

I watched the movie last night and enjoyed it very much. It's always nice to get Finnish movies on BD, as there are only a handful so far but hopefully more in the future. The strongest part of the movie was indeed the performances of the main characters and the authentic feeling of the period. There's a bit of humor mixed in with the grim elements + some dysfunctional but emotionally haunting family relations. The ending was a bit weak compared to the rest of the story though, but overall it was a pretty good movie.

PQ was excellent, but AQ mix was fairly flat. Some nice and moody music in the movie though.

By the way, the subs are partly on top of the video image and partly below it. Only the main feature has English subs, the extras are with Finnish audio only.

Thanks for the info! The trailer looks very interesting. I thought Ganes was a very good Finnish movie, also set in the 60s/70s. I'm sure I would enjoy Rööperi as well.

Yeah, I think you'd like Rööperi as well, it has some similar themes and the period setting. I certainly liked both.

Also got a Finnish movie Tyttö sinä olet tähti recently, it was a bit hard to import as neither of my usual Finnish source shops seemed to ever get it in stock. Eventually I got it by sending a personal enquiry to boostep.fi about the availability after which they got enough stock to sell me one Since then it seemed to be unavailable again.

It's English friendly too, a bit youth oriented movie about a girl who wants to become an R&B star and an uncompromising rapper who starts to work with her on some songs, and their slowly forming relationship. It was the first movie by the director of Kielletty Hedelmä, which I wrote some impressions about earlier. It's apparently his graduation work. Half of that film was shot on 16 mm and half on HD video (according to IMDB) and the grain structure on it looked a bit rough, but not too bad.

Thanks again for the info about the Finnish movies, I'll probably get Rööperi at least.

Good to hear you liked Ganes. I recommend the BD, it has good PQ/AQ. I ordered it from boostep.fi.

I thought Rööperi was pretty good overall. Jasper Pääkkönen's performance (that has been criticized by many) was a bit off in my view as well, and I didn't really like the ending but overall it was strong and Samuli Edelmann and Peter Franzén were very convincing in their parts. For me there's always some extra enjoyment in watching Finnish movies in HD as I only go to Finland about once a year for some holidays, so it's kind of nostalgic too.
