Got the RAN disc today (Dutch). It plays in region A and B but not C (confirmed).
The book cover is higher and slightly wider than a normal BD case (pics):

How does Ran look? As I recall, Studio Canal's French HD DVD was panned for its picture quality.

PQ is not very good, there are problems like EE and DNR.

Shit...time to cancel Ran from my Amazon US order and hold on to my US Criterion DVD. I was hoping it would be a different master than the French HD-DVD

I'm getting "Ran" regardless.
I mean Criterion has lost the rights, so this is probably it for a while.
At least it has English subs.
confused about the pic above--
is that a "Ran" bd from Japan or something?
I think it came out there correct?
how does it compare?
It would seem logical imo to assume that the titles that was previously on HD DVD--"Elephant Man" and "Ran" would be the same.
Just can't see them taking the time to try and improve things, but maybe.

Yeah, it is probably safe to assume that they will be the same. A combination of forgetting Ran was released by studio canal on HD-DVD and the new fancy packaging had me expecting premium product.

Now, we just need to find out if Elephant Man has the same pitch problem as the HD-DVD. Then I'll know whether or not to keep that one in my order too.

Do you feel they are the same transfer/encode?

It's not the same encode, VC-1 vs. MPEG-4 AVC. I think it's a different transfer, the Japanese BD has a lot of white specs and other imperfections that seems to be mostly absent from the Studio Canal release. The SC image fills the entire screen, the Kadokawa has black bars in the upper and lower parts of the screen.

every link from amazon US has disappeared except for "contempt"
looks like Lionsgate got wind of this because apparently these releases are configured so that they can release the discs in different parts of the world.
oh well.
guess I'll have to go the amazon.UK route after all.
knew it was too good to be true.

My order hasn't been canceled for Belle, so here's hoping it somehow ships. They're both expected by October 1st.
