This was delayed until November and then the release date was brought forward to next Monday (26th October) -- my copy shipped from Play.com yesterday.

What did you think of it? From Amazon UK customer reviews, it's apparently the 181 minute theatrical version and not the 227 minute extended version that Amazon had listed but has now corrected.

I'm also golden with my German Kinowelt release (Region B locked).

Thumbs up Dances with Wolves ALL -REGION

I've sold my German disc, the Extended Cut is way too long. Costner would not have won Best Picture with the 4 hour version. Thank goodness we have the Oscar version on Blu-ray. The picture is excellent with the Warner disc using the VC1 mastering which provides fine detail and sharpness.

The sound is Dolby TrueHD with the Native American subtitles in the picture and one line in the black bar at the bottom. I wish all subtitles would be in the picture.

Is the Warner theatrical cut region-free?

http://blurayregioncodes.com/index.php?region=b

They say it is region free. But I don't think anyone here has said for sure

What the difference besides the minutes?

German edition Englisch (DTS-HD 7.1)
UK Edition True-HD 5.1?

I thought there was something about a screw up on the quality of the transfer of the earlier editions

Default Dances with Wolves ALL -REGION

I wrote three threads back that the disc was Region Free. I'm the one that provided the info for the http://www.blurayregioncodes.com/ website.

The different between the discs. The German disc features the Extended Cut (4 hours) DTS HD sound and a commentary with Costner, Wilson, and others. This version is not the Oscar winning film.

The UK version features the Oscar winning film (3 hours), Dolby TrueHD and no extras.

Both feature almost the same hi-def imagery, excellent sharpness, depth and color.

I just want to point out that the German version actually has DTS-HD Master Audio 7.1

Naw, the earlier German release has excellent PQ and audio. It is Region B locked, which eliminates it for consideration by many. The runtime is a matter of personal taste. The 3 hour theatrical version does have better pacing, and already fairly long for a theatrical run. But I enjoy the movie so much I prefer the additional hour - it provides additional insight into the lives of Native Americans and more beautiful cinematography.

I don't think I'd watch the director's cut very often, but I would have preferred to have the choice on the UK disc.

Ah. That makes the German more desirable to me. Although I might not always want to watch the longer cut.

Why no branching edition? I'm surprised WB is so gimped far a special features go and longer cut, and no commentary

Yeah, it's the French release, while region free, has PAL audio pitch problems, color timing off, and poor detail. Here's a couple of member's comments:

My copy arrived today from amazon uk. I put it in my Panasonic BD-35 and it played perfectly. Yes it is region free.
This is the 181 minute theatrical version and there are no previews to sit through, the movies comes up right off by itself. There are NO extras on this bd! All you receive is the 3 hour movie. The audio is in Dolby TrueHD: English 5.1 , Dolby digital: English 5.1, Italian 2.0, Castilian Spanish 5.1, Czech 5.1.
The video is 1080p, 16x9 letterbox and subtitles in too many languages to name them all.

The video quality was superb for the most part. I did notice some blurring near the beginning when Costner was galloping on his horse but that was a one off AFAIK.
With the current currency rate of the usd one can expect to pay between $24-$26 usd for this movie which I hear may not come out in the US anytime soon.

I have never seen the extended version so I really do not know what I have missed out on but this title is still a good buy IMO, but I am truly miffed that these companies are putting out a product that they are touting to be so much better and yet there were no extras included with this title.
