ENG DTS HD MA 5.1 on both, with ENG DD 5.1 and FRN 5.1 as well. both films default to lossy DD, no subtitles on disc.

FD2 is 1.78 rather than 1.85. FD3, i haven't had the chance to view yet, but IMDB lists it as 2.35, while the package states 1.78. RUH ROH!

I know Hostage is the wrong aspect ratio but does anyone here have it? Is it a major difference compared to its original aspect ratio?

Final Destination 3, from 2.35 to 1.78. yes, there is some noticeable loss of picture on this blu-ray. it is NOWHERE near as bad as one would expect from that much of a shift, however, i played my dvd on my laptop in sync with my bd on my 65, and paused them both at times, where i could clearly make out points to compare, and you are losing about 10% of the picture here.

it isn't DRASTIC, guys, but it is there. to say it isn't is flat wrong. AVC MPEG-4 encode, lossy default, though lossless available through menu.

How is only a 10% loss possible? Going from 2.35:1 to 1.78:1 is massive. You would think more picture would be lost. Hmm...tempting to buy. 0 -5 what would you rate the PQ on each of these releases?

I'd assume that the transfer probably is some combination of open matte on the top and bottom with a little cropping on the sides.

I think you need to go a bit easier on Alliance. Wouldn't you rather have some form of HD release of these films than nothing at all? Sure, they'll probably be released in the US sometime, and they'll probably be better quality releases with correct aspect ratios and supplemental material. That said, Alliance discs are cheap, so the potential US releases will probably cost quite a bit more.

Take "The English Patient" for example. Now, it's a 1080i release, so that's not great, but it does have a lossless audio track. I think Weinstein holds the rights to this movie in the US. When do you think we'll see it released there? So, Alliance is your only opportunity to own this Oscar winning film in HD. Should we trash Alliance for that?

Getting back to your reviews of the FD films, I found this line rather funny:

I know what you're thinking. Nate. Reviewing a Blu-ray from Alliance. This is going to start with some general insults about the company and their track record, and continue on with remarks about how languid every bit of the audio and video are. I mean, there is a track record supporting such a train of thought, almost as much as there is a track record of Alliance putting out sub-par discs to cash in on titles that have yet to see their releases from the studios who own them here, ya know, in the country where they were made.
Take a look at this:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0309593/locations

Anyway, sorry for the rant, but the anti-Alliance rhetoric 'round these parts is getting on my nerves. If you don't like their releases, don't buy them. I, for one, would rather have the choice to buy than not.

I like Nate's reviews but he seems a bit neutered here at HDD on some of the things he can say. His Project-Blu stuff is more interesting.

I have both FDs on order so I'll post some comparison shots when they arrive (i.e. what the DVD shows compared to the BD).
