Thanks to everyone who posted about The Painted Veil, especially wvbkelley3rd. I ordered the movie from Amazon.de on a Saturday and received it in Canada the following Friday.

I can confirm that the movie is region free, plays perfectly on a PS3 and contains the English soundtrack without German subtitles. A truly intelligent, well acted and superbly shot movie in the slow, show-don't-tell style of The Piano and the 2002 version of Solaris - two other movies I'm looking forward to on Blu-ray.
