Not bad prices in Japanese terms. I wonder if they will do a 3 pack, and also if they have subs. They are fantastic movies.

If these are the "real" movies, you are WAY better off buying the anime series.
Watched the first movie - it was utter crap, and ever more utter crap if you compare it to the mange or anime (read and seen both of them)

"Compare it to the mange". LOL.

I haven't seen the anime - I'm waiting for the Australian release to be finished and get released as a set. I don't download and don't buy progressive releases.

I loved the movies, especially the first.

I actually thought Death Note 1 and 2 live action movies were awesome. Change the World was a little disappointing.

As an aside, loved seeing the Chairman from Iron Chef as Lights father.

I'm also waiting on the last two volumes and then I'm going to watch them in one sitting Napalm. I got sick of watching anime in 4 ep bursts every 1 to 2 months apart with Madman's release schedule so now I wait until I have the full set.

Yeah, I hear you there - I don't have the patience to watch a series courtesy of Madman's release schedule. They seriously should just stop releasing progressive series. I'd be interested in what their sales figures were like for box set vs progressive. With some of the sales Madman had at the end of last year I've caught up on a lot of series I was interested in. The only series I bought progressively was GITS:SAC. I got to the third disc and stopped watching until they were all available. It was a mistake. 2nd Gig I waited until it was complete then bought it.

And not just madman, some US companies too. I am a huge Patlabor fan. It took them around 6 years to release them all on DVD. I waited until they were all available and then got them. Then of course, after the completed them they only kept them in print for about a year. Utter stupidity...

I guess one of the factors affecting release time is when they feel compelled to dub them. I can't be bothered with dubs at all. With Patlabor, they gave up dubbing them by the end.

I'd say there are two factors at play:

    (1) individual releases net them more for a total series
    (2) if they wait to long they run the risk of people sourcing by other means.

They can't really lose on the individual releases as they can just box up whatever is still on hand in the warehouse at the end of the individual run.

I too bought up in the last sale (not as much as I spent in the 10th anniversary sale though :P

    Some good bargains though.

Yeah, aside from the October sale, that 24h sale they had early December had some ridiculous prices. I got Heat Guy set for $24.98, Planetes for $29.98, Yukikaze for $17.48. Mad prices!

Regarding (1) it may net them more per item, but quantity would have to be pretty poor. I mean can you imagine TV on DVD ever succeeding if they released it like Anime is released? No way.

Regarding (2) I don't think that is a factor honestly. The type of people that will settle for lower quality (in most cases) downloads while the series is running probably wouldn't have bought it anyhow. And if all they were doing was subbing a release, not dubbing it, it could be done pretty fast (even if they "lifted" fansubs subtitles - not like fansubbers can complain).

    Just my thoughts anyhow.

All good points. But I do think there are alot who buy individual releases. I buy some (even though I wait until finished - because I know even when finished there is still a few months until a compiled box set is released and sometimes the box set prices don't match the quantity of discs, but I digress). I find that on release day the single disc versions sell out pretty quick. In the past I have, and I know people who do now, had to/have to hunt around for weeks to find a store with a copy.

As an aside, good to be talking with you again.

    Likewise

You are probably right. My habits are probably more the oddity rather than the rule. I don't watch any TV, but I watch a lot of tv on DVD. I don't download. I'm too impatient to wait even week to week to watch a show (with adds, and bleeding vile station logos), so I just wait for the DVD release. I guess most people are impatient in other areas, in that they can't wait a whole year to see what is going to happen, where I am impatient in that I can't wait week to week to drag it out. That probably translates in anime selling as well.

I'd love to see actual sales figures for anime though.

I checked the cases of all 3 in a shop today and all have only Japanese subtitles listed in the back of the cases. I think the other 2 are probably region free also as no region symbols were included and other VAP releases seem to be region free, but I can't confirm since I didn't get them.
Blu-ray: 450 (new: [REC]2 (JP), Avatar (JP), Cargo (DE), Salvador (DE), Bubba Ho-Tep (DE) ; list)
HD DVD: 388 (new: Project Papo (JP), Taking Lives, Moonlight Jellyfish (JP), Resident Evil (JP) ; list)
HD DVD-R: 380 (new: The Chaser, Zebraman, Drop (2009), Platoon ; list)
