Damn it on the lack of subs

Watched Death Note yesterday with external subs. Enjoyed the movie quite much! The story was interesting. Some of the acting performances weren't too special but overall it was very entertaining.

I was happy to spot a smartphone I worked on (as a software project manager) a few years ago displayed on the movie, 3rd and 4th screencaps. L has a unique way of holding it, they talk about that holding style on the commentary track. Apparently some users copied the style.

I watched Death Note: The Last Name today with external subs. I thought it was even better than the first one, more polished and better paced and the ending was pretty strong. Enjoyed it quite a lot.

I've got the 3rd movie on the way from Amazon JP as well, luckily it was discounted 37% currently. Ordered it with Final Fantasy VII Advent Children Complete. I should receive them tomorrow.

Watched The Last Name and Change the World with the English subtitles, The Last Name was very good and suspensful. The subs seemed ok to me but it's good to have them, I wouldn't complain about them unless they were really bad.

There seemed to be quite many subs available for The Last Name, the first ones I tried seemed to be for some different version as they didn't work at all. The ones I ended up using were quite good, I chose the 3rd set from the list that has been uploaded there on 2008-06-10. I did some tuning on the timings first though comparing to the Japanese subs on the original (extracted with help of eac3to and suprip), mapped the matching subs like this (first number on a line is subtitle line number for original and the second is for the corresponding English SRT that I used).

I made a small piece of software that calculates the difference in milliseconds based on the two subtitle files (original Japanese & english) that uses my link file that maps some of the corresponding lines. It produces a timing difference list for the referenced points like this:

If you haven't read the manga or watched the anime you're really missing out. The movies did a fair job though considering how much they had to compress the story to fit it into two movies. The actor for L was an excellent bit of casting, and did a great job.

I don't read manga at all, it's basically available only in Japanese here anyway and I'd have some problems reading all the kanji. It's just not my thing. My wife reads manga pretty actively though.

I thought the movies worked pretty well as stand-alone, I wasn't very familiar with the source material but I could fully enjoy the movies as they were.

I agree that the actor who played L was pretty excellent in the role. I enjoyed his performance a lot. Tatsuya Fujiwara as Light Yagami wasn't as impressive.

Actually the timings were correct in the verison I used, the entire movie played without sync problems. The file is labelled 3114953.
I used the subs 3309428 for Change the World and they also worked correctly.

Thanks for the info, I'll try to use the same subs for L Change the World. I don't use TitleDrome so I have to make the timings match completely beforehand as I rebuild the movie with the added subs using tsMuxeR and watch with my PS3. That way there's no way to adjust anything while watching. So I've been trying to make a good workflow that makes it possible to adjust the timings reliably and as easily as possible before remuxing Quite often there is some gap between original and English SRT but in the easy cases the gap is constant throughout. The most difficult ones have very inconsistent gaps, with several points in the movie where the gap suddenly changes for a period of time. Those take quite much work.

In that case there's probably some imperfections in these files that needs correcing. When watching them with Titledrome there wasn't anything very noticeable. It would be convenient to have the movie combined with the subs but Titledrome works quite well too.
