I received Kielletty Hedelmä from Finland and Boy A from Sweden today. Kielletty Hedelmä (Forbidden Fruit in English) is region free (though marked B in the back of the case) and all streams on the disc are in 1080p/24p (23.976 to be exact). Some of the extras have been upscaled from SD to 1080p, works nice for us who don't like PAL extras. Looks like Sandrew Metronome has also dropped the 1080i50 intro that made their discs unplayable in U.S. and Japan PS3s, the same intro is now in 1080p. Good going The movie is in Finnish but contains English subs. I'll post impressions later.

Boy A looks to be region free too (though marked B on case), but I must confirm with PS3 as AnyDVD HD couldn't confirm reliably because of some Java stuff. It's a Noble/SME/Future release for Sweden/Norway/Finland though seems to be released only in Sweden so far, or at least not in Finland yet. The main movie is in 1080p/24 (23.976 to be exact) and all other streams are all also in 1080p (some 23.976 and some 24). The original audio is in English and optional Swedish/Norwegian/Finnish subs are available. I'll post impressions on this one later as well.

Another Nordic movie released on BD recently is Nord. According to the back cover, it's got English subtitles and it's 1080p/24. Marked Region B but it might still be Region Free. It seems difficult to find a Norwegian store that ship internationally though.

According to the case it does have English subs and I'll confirm with the actual disc later today.

=> Now checked. Yes, English subs are there allright. Purely inside the 2.35:1 video image.

Audio is Japanese PCM 5.1 and Japanese TrueHD 5.1 + Japanese DD 2.0 commentary track. There's a SD DVD included with extras.

I couldn't confirm region status because AnyDVD server is down now, or unable to connect to it for some reason. No region marking on the case or disc so more likely region free than not.

Looking forward to watching this! Will post some impressions later.

Seems interesting! Yeah, I'm still unaware of any Norwegian stores that would ship to Japan. www.zailor.no may ship to various other countries though, including U.S. at least if they ship to all countries from their member registration country selection list.

Received and watched Brick today -- 1080i, 2.0 LPCM/DTS-HD MA 5.1, B-locked. Not bad looking (being low budget, I doubt it could be any better), but temper expectations.

Was it 1080i50, or 1080i60? Not that it matters too much since it's region B locked, but just curious

Also, anyone have any info on the Italian release of The Interpreter? Regions, audio, subtitles forced or not, etc. I want to get this one, but I fear that any non-English dialogue will go un-subbed unless you turn on the full English sub track which would sub the entire movie.

I'm pretty certain Brick was 50hz.

I watched Jägarna (The Hunters), a Swedish release by SF Films. It's region locked and 1080i50 but comes with English subs. Swedish DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio. I enjoyed the movie pretty much. A Nordic thriller set in northern Sweden, involving a gang of reindeer poachers in a pretty closed rural community and a cop from Stockholm who moves back up there and starts to investigate what's going on.

Hotel Hibiscus [JP] is Region Free and has English subtitles (as expected). PQ seems fine and faithful to the source. Recommended!

Quote:
Three years after Nabbie's Love, writer-director Nakae Yuji offers another delightful comedy set on the balmy island of Okinawa. Based on Nakasone Miiko's same-titled manga, Hotel Hibiscus sees the world through the eyes of an adventurous young girl. Bright, sunny, and wholly enjoyable, the film follows young Mieko, portrayed by Kurashita Honami, on her episodic summer capers like her trip to the pineapple fields and her search for a spirit on the US military base. Then of course there's the daily comings and goings of her very eccentric and very international family - her brother is African-American and her sister is Caucasian - and their rundown "hotel" which has only one guest room. Co-starring Yo Kimiko, Wada Toshihiro, singer Teruya Masao, and Nabbie's Love grandma Taira Tomi, Hotel Hibiscus's humorous and heartwarming romp through Mieko's long and hot summer has the pleasant, lolling atmosphere and childhood magic of a live-action Ghibli film.

I'll need to pick this up sometime soon. Pretty busy at work these past few weeks though so not much time to watch movies.

Bought Nabbie's Love from the same director as well, look forward to watching it. It seems to be a rather special movie and it's also filmed in Okinawa.

By the way, watched Ganes and enjoyed it quite a lot. I did't know much about the band before but it was very interesting to learn about them. I was able to change the size and position of the subtitles with the Subtitle Style option of the Panasonic BD player.
