It's not a problem for my subtitle method as I remux the original video stream and audio stream with external subs using tsMuxeR, which means any forced subs that are not hardcoded into the video image will be dropped out. If there is an option to watch the movie with French audio dub without the subs (usually the French releases have that option), then the subs can't be hardcoded into the video image.
If you are using PC for playback with AnyDVD HD, checking the option to remove "Prohibited User Operations" in AnyDVD's Video Blu-ray settings also allows this kind of forced subs to be turned off using playback software's subtitle setting after starting playback.
On standalone players there's of course no method to turn the subs off then when watching the original disc though, but there's no way to add external subs that way either. -

Thanks for the info on AnyDVD HD! I didn't know it can remove forced subtitles. I tried it with the French BD The Banquet and it really works.
Look forward to watching Crows Zero with the external subs.
The Mongol UK BD is the only disc with hardcoded subs that I own. -

I also have a couple of UK BDs with hardcoded English subs (Female Agents, Downfall etc.) but it's not been much of a problem because I need those English subs with them anyway.
I'm also going to pre-order Crows Zero, hopefully it will be a good transfer and not a 1080i50 encode

I hope to get them soon, probably Thursday or Friday. I'll post some info when I've received them. -

I took a look at recent Italian releases at dvdland.it and ordered these:
Come Dio Comanda (As God Commands)
http://www.dvdland.it/nicom1/p_56097...a_blu_ray.html
The Burning Plain
http://www.dvdland.it/nicom1/p_56124...e_blu_ray.html
The Horsemen
http://www.dvdland.it/nicom1/p_56215...n_blu_ray.html
The first one is an Italian film and according to dvdland it has English subs. I'll post some info when I get these, probably about 10 days from now. -

I certainly will. It was a bit strange ordering though I went through their charge card service but it came back that they needed to verify things or something so I was asked for my cellphone number then told to enter the verification code once sent by SMS, once I did that everything was fine.
EDIT: Just got my shipping notification this morning.Last edited by DCSholtis; 06-26-2009 at 05:55 PM.

The Unborn foreign blu-rays
Any word yet on whether the UK, Australia, or other foreign blu-ray of The Unborn will be region-free? I want a copy that has the international cover art (much better than the US artwork don't u think?.....
)

There's a review of the UK version of The Unborn here:
http://www.avforums.com/movies/index.php?showmedia=9759
It lists the region as 0 in the specs section which may mean it's region free... I guess since it's by Universal it's fairly likely to be region free but one can never be certain without testing or reliable reports.
