Unfortunately, Studio Canal's HD DVD edition of the movie looks pretty mediocre. I'd expect this to use the same transfer.

strangely enough when the HD DVD came out most people thought it looked great, but it sounds like it was the "hd newness factor" at work.

I wasn't impressed with the HD DVD. Here's the review I wrote at the time:

well i don't want to sound like the only optimist here but on my system,i thought it looked great.using a 100 inch front projector screen.usually any flaws would be obvious when magnified largely.i'm no technical expert here but thru my experience i believe picture quality actually varies from digital to digital displays.i've read 'expert reviews' even from here for example,RE Apocalypse getting a bad review.on my system,it is one of the sharpest blu rays that i own.definite demo material.although their review of Brotherhood of the Wolf HD DVD is more in line with how i felt.i have others here that share my feelings...

I found a review of the French Blu-ray on DVDRama.com which indicates that the disc is region locked and contains no subtitles. That, of course, could be the truth or simply what the package says.

I can't post links yet, and I don't want to raise the ire of any moderators by posting a text link, but if you search for it on DVDRama, you should find the reivew.

Canal's disc should be region-locked (this has been the preliminary info) but I don't believe that the subs info is correct.

Here's the link the the dvdrama review, http://www.dvdrama.com/rw_fiche-10308-.php

The information on Studio Canal's own website indicates English subs, http://www.studiocanaldvd.com/fr/pro..._scv_45641.php

A word of advice, regardless of how this disc turns out (and I believe that it will be English-friendly as it should be the same master used for the HDDVD) don't trust RAMA and their info when it comes to subs.

Hi,

If this has Emglish subs and is Region A compatible I will buy this immedietely.
Why Studio Canal would make this Region A only when they published a regionfree HD-DVD before is beyond me.

However it seems we cannot be sure until September 23th.

well all HD-DVDs were region free so it wasn't a studio thing but more of a format thing.I would think this would have english subs as I wouldn't be suprised if the HD-DVD is more or less transfred/converted to blu.

anyway if its region free I will get this despite subs. as I've allready got the HD-DVD but id really like the french version. as I've got the UK version now. yes, I know there the same interms of disc conntent but I want the french title on both the cover and the disc

Looks like Kannisto has posted it on the main Import Thread as Region B locked, but English friendly. I'm not sure what his source is, but it makes sense as France and the UK shared the same HD DVD. I'm probably buying a BH200 soon, so the English was my big sticking point.
