Eraserhead and Lost Highway (JP release impressions)

Got a nice big package from Amazon JP this morning, including Eraserhead and Lost Highway (+ 3 of the Japanese Ring movies, Rasen shipped separately).

Both of these are region free and come in thick Blu-ray cases with slipcase covers. Eraserhead is a BD25 and Lost Highway is a BD50. Both come with a separate extras DVD.

Some comparison screenshots between French Lost Highway (left) and Japanese one (right). Almost the same but colors look a bit warmer on the Japanese release, except on the 2nd pair of pics where the Japanese one looks colder.

I guess they won't be too different but we'll see... I'm pretty happy with Eraserhead, Lost Highway is almost the same as the French release that I had already though.

I'm a bit surprised – to put it mildly– to see 6-channel LPCM audio being used for the Lost Highway disc. DTS HD MA is more or less the standard. I can understand its use for 2-ch audio tracks, but for multichannel it is too incompatible. At least it saves me Amazon.co.jp's exorbitant shipping costs (and resulting import fees) though.

The company that is the "content owner" for these Japan releases is Comstock Group, Paramount is just distributing. Don't know why they use LPCM but they may not have released much on BD up to now.

In the early days of Blu-ray there were quite many 5.1 LPCM tracks around... With my setup it makes no difference if it's uncompressed or compressed.

Incompatible with what? Everything gets converted to PCM at some point in the process. More receivers can handle PCM than can't.

My understanding is If you use LPCM it's free, you have to pay for any DTS or DD codec.

I've asked Dolby about this in the past, and was told that there are no licensing fees for any of their codecs. I believe DTS is the same. However, the studio may need to pay for the encoders, but that would be a one-time expense.
