There was some discussion on this in the Amazon JP upcoming releases thread but I figured it might deserve it's own thread.

CoMix Wave Films and Media Factory are going to release a Japanese CG animated film Planzet on Blu-ray on 3rd of September, with English subs. The main feature is only 53 minutes + there are 70 minutes of extras (not sure if the English subs extend to the extras as well or if they are just for the main feature).

I watched this last night and enjoyed it, but it's too short at 53 minutes and there should have been more battles with "Geometric Limbs", GL, as they called those Mecha in this movie. Those parts were the most exciting ones.

The PQ is solid but they've put rather much artificial grain in the image. The first 6 minutes looks like old scratched film on purpose, it's a kind of a flashback telling the back story of the main character and his little sister. After that the movie really starts and the image becomes "normal", but it remains relatively "grainy" even after that. I like grain when it's real film grain but not as much when it's something artificially made to achieve a certain look.

The story is rather straightforward and fairly predictable, and the characters are rather stereotypical. I enjoyed some of the CGI graphics aspects the most. There's also some very nice music in the movie. The AQ wasn't especially impressive, the surround sound is not very enveloping.

Overall it's pretty nice especially from visuals point of view but a bit pricey considering the short runtime.

The extras are all in 1080p / 23.976 fps too (but at around 10 kbps video bitrate). They don't have English subs. There are some interviews of the voice actors for the main characters and the director, and some "animatics" explanation, trailers and TV spots and a "first half digest", which is like an extended trailer running for about 10 minutes.
