I received 20th Century Boys 3 from Amazon JP today (official release date is tomorrow).

This is the final chapter of the 3 movie series. Finally the identity of "Friend" is to be revealed. This release is region free but not English friendly. There'll probably be an English friendly HK release later on though not sure if it'll include both cuts of the movie. No external subs seem to be available yet but hopefully soon and hopefully for both versions...

The PQ is rather similar to the first 2 VAP BDs of the 20th Century Boys series. Lots of grain, rather faded out colors and a very rough look, many wide angle shots. I guess that's how the movie has been shot, it's not a demo disc but the story is very rich and entertaining. Looking forward to watching the movie

I guess it may be difficult to grasp every detail without English subs though, I didn't watch the 2 first ones before I had subs for them but I'm eager to watch this one soon.

I finally watched the movie after getting English subs for it from subscene.com (the ones by JDM_Dingo with some adustments that I made to improve them technically). The subs were very good, fully commercial quality from the translation point of view.

I enjoyed the movie a lot, I think it was a fully satisfying finale. The subs were only available for the theatrical cut, and I watched the extended ending separately without subs (from 2:22:30 timepoint). It contains the same final ending but it additionally includes 10+ minutes of added scenes just before the ending.

Surprisingly the PQ of the extended ending was clearly better than the PQ of the theatrical cut (which looks similar to the 2 previous movies on Japanese BD releases), and the scenes that are the same in both had also a different presentation on the extended ending (better PQ, a bit different framing). Some comparison screenshots from the identical scenes in the theatrical ending and extended ending (these shouldn't reveal much about the story):






Left side is from the theatrical cut's ending, right side is from the extended ending. The theatrical cut is zoomed in a bit more and the PQ on it is not as good. It would be nice to have the whole movie with the better PQ (or all 3 movies).

just curious, how do you play the subtitle, do you need to dump the blu-ray first to iso then play them on PC ?

I demux all the streams from the original BD with eac3to and remux them together with the SRT subs using tsmuxer (after the SRT subs have been correctly timed to match the BD) to a Blu-ray structure and I then burn the resulting Blu-ray disc structure to a BD-R or BD-RE (DL in this case) using imgburn and I play it on my main setup. AnyDVD HD is also required to make it all work.

I also use some other tools (Subtitle Workshop, Suprip...) to compare the corresponding subtitle timings in the English SRT file to the subs on the original disc (e.g. in Japanese) and to make some adjustments.

This way the font for the subs and the font size, color etc. and text placement on the screen can be freely controlled and multiple versions of the subs can be put on the same disc too.

Another way would be e.g. to play the original disc on a PC and to use e.g. TitleDrome or something similar to overlay the external subs on the display during playback.

Watched the HK version and enjoyed it very much. It's the theatrical version only. Also watched the extended alternate ending of the Japanese version. Didn't feel the difference was that great but it would have been nice to have it on the HK disc as well. The PQ quality on the HK version is about the same as the theatrical Japanese version. The audio options are a bit different though. The only extras are trailers for 20th Century Boys Chapters 1-2.

^ Thanks for the info. Yep, the extra scenes in the longer cut are not really adding much to the story...

Good to know that the HK release is about the same in PQ as the majority of the Japanese release. I was wondering if it might be more like the better looking extra parts on the Japanese disc for some reason.

It might be time to rewatch all 3 films soon close to each other as there were long gaps in between on the first time watching them
