Kamui gaiden (Japan - SHV)
I got Kamui gaiden from Amazon JP today on official release day. It's one of the first Shochiku Home Video studio's releases on Blu-ray, they were one of the foremost Japanese studios who released Japan exclusives on HD DVD earlier on.
This release is region free but not English friendly.

A blog review of the film:
http://www-ss.blogspot.com/2009/09/1...ie-review.html
I watched this last night and enjoyed the movie, but it was a bit hard to follow some of the dialogue in old style Japanese. The movie was quite entertaining and there are lots of nice action sequences, including rather over the top jumping and flying moves. There are also several CGI sequences that look pretty fake, involving land animals and sharks that move unnaturally + some fake animal CGI blood flying around. One has to take it as rather comic book style entertainment, but there are also some pretty dramatic moments.
PQ of the movie was quite rough and gritty, and there are many soft focus shots. Colors are also rather unnatural in many scenes, especially when it comes to water. Certainly not demo material, but I think the BD has probably an accurate representation of the film.
I think the movie will divide audiences, but personally I enjoyed it quite much. I'd recommend it but since there are no English subs it's not a suitable version for non-Japanese speakers as of yet, but UK will have a BD release later on as well. -

Looks very interesting.
Will get this, the UK release isn't out until August. I wonder if SHV has any plans of releasing some older movies on BD, including those that are out on HD DVD.

So far SHV seems to be selectively releasing only some of their bigger new movies on BD but hopefully they'll get around to re-releasing all those they released on HD DVD also on BD and other older titles as well. I've kept all the HD DVDs though so I wouldn't rebuy them on BD personally. I do think they picked up quite interesting and high quality movies for release on HD DVD, I've enjoyed watching many of them more than once (usually converted to BD with external subs).

Yes, the movies that were chosen for their HD DVD releases are all very good. I'd like to see them re-released on BD as I didn't keep the HD DVDs. I expected them to be among the first titles to be released on BD... I'm curious if the BDs, when/if they are released, will be different in terms of transfers etc. As for Kamui Gaiden it seems very good technically.

Yeah, quite many Japanese studios seem to use the space on a BD50 to encode at very high video bitrates, I suppose SHV would probably add lossless audio and perhaps a new video encode if and when they re-release the same movies they had on HD DVD on BD. I'm just wondering if they thought the sales volumes on HD DVD weren't enough to warrant re-releasing those movies on BD soon...
On HD DVD most of their releases were fairly compact and didn't quite use nearly all of the 30 GB space, typically the main feature was around 20 GB.
(Seems that Imageshack has lost the front cover pic from this thread, if it doesn't show up again by itself soon I'll re-upload it. EDIT: It seems to be back already...) -

Man "Volcano High" with Lossless audio on BD.

THAT would be a treat. It's not like FOX has scheduled any date for it. Also it's likely they'd fuck up the transfer as well.
Didn't Shochiku release "The Uninvited" on HD DVD as well? Am I the only one who finds it pathetic that some of the more popular Korean movies have only had Japanese releases in one way or another? Heck a Korean Drama was released over in Japan on BD and it STILL hasn't been released in Korea on BD to my knowledge. Granted it's like $700 which is definitely overpriced but you'd think the price would start to tame itself a bit.
Also is Shochiku still owned by Toshiba? I thought they ended up selling them. Dang shame if so.HD DVD, the best in extras!
My HD DVD list: "Clerks 2", "The World's Fastest Indian", "The Thing", "V For Vendetta", "Enter the Dragon" and "Casablanca".
My Blu-ray list: "Warriors Of Heaven and Earth", "Curse Of the Golden Flower", "Kung Fu Hustle", Weeds Season 2, "Rent", "Tekkonkinkreet",
"Lives Of Others", "Black Book", "Hairspray" and "Life Of Brian". -

Both Volcano High and The Uninvited were Toshiba Entertainment releases on HD DVD, not related to SHV. Toshiba never owned Shochiku, they actually bought Amuse Pictures and turned that into Toshiba Entertainment, which then was sold and became Showgate later on. I think Amuse Soft Entertainment was part of that but they kept their name also and now they release as Amuse Soft Entertainment again (e.g. Tajomaru).
Yeah, it would be nice if more BDs were released in Korea, still been very slow though at least CJ Entertainment is now releasing something every couple of months.
