I love this quote and how direct he is. Its so true

“We may be a very small company, but where we are different from the likes of Denon and Sony is that we listen to our customers. Feedback is really important.”

lol...as apposed to our competition we actually listen to our customers. Imagine that!

Genius, pure genius.

I have to assume that their Blu-ray players will still mainting the same standard of DVD upconversion. They just won't be making any DVD-only machines anymore.

The way the article is worded makes it sound like they're dumping DVD entirely.

‘We have sold out of DVD players and there are no more to come,' he says. 'The DVD business is over for us. We are committed to Blu-ray.’

That is awesome. I really like Oppo Digital as a company and I will continue to support them and buy their products.

Well, I expect their customers are telling them that they are "no longer going to purchase very expensive DVD upconverting players made by Oppo" - so yeah - Oppo is definitely listening . . . as would any other CE firm that wants to stay in business for some period of time . . .

How about lowering price on BDP-83. That would be a really good way to show the commitment.

Blu-ray

i hope they don't take out features when they start doing that. i hope they make BDP-84 or BDP-90 or somn like that w/online streaming stuff in HD, but still maintain everything else and lower 83's price. so it's similar to how their older model's release patterns have been. more features for less =P.

This company hasn't lowered prices on their product yet so i don't know why they'd start now. I'll pay 600 for the best anyday."One player to rule them all."

That's called fanboyism, you know. Who's ready to pay even more, say $750? Way to go...

I doubt their customers are saying anything like that. Oppo customers would not be satisfied with a $59 Walmart dvd player. I think most of us (as in Oppo customers) are a little beyond that point in their lives. Hell, I have two of their machines (the 980 and the 83) and would definitely purchase another upconverting dvd player from them if I needed one. Sometimes you do indeed get what you pay for.

I'm not knocking their products. I'm just pointing out that the people who are willing to purchase an expensive Oppo DVD upconverting player at the prices they charge using their very limited distribution system have already purchased them. I'm suggesting the market for that product line has now dried up - so they've stopped making them.
You don't really think they would have stopped offering the product line for sale if people were banging down the doors to get them, do you?

I'm in! With Oppo leaving the DVD market it seems that they will have to expand their Blu-ray offering (product line) beyond one item. A player like you describe would be #1 on my list of recomendations. Remove the hardware & software required for analog support and put in on the market as the BDP-8x. Removing all the analog hardare would be easy, but rewriting the 83's software is where the development costs will likely be.

Yeah, I think it is safe to say that most people that really care about PQ have either moved onto Blu-Ray or are going to in the near future. The fact that the Oppo Blu-Ray players have excellent DVD upconversion is just icing on the cake.

I expect to see companies like NAD, Marantz, Denon, etc follow Oppo's lead if this is what their customers are asking for (Blu-Ray).
