The PS3 needs to get on this update accepting MKV capability. I hate converting them to PS3 format to play HD videos

Why not just stream the MKVs direct from your LAN using PS3 Media Server?

Neither.

Only new Samsung players like the 1600, 3600 and 4600 (maybe there HTIBs...I don't know the model # for them).

Dang...MKV support sounds nice! How does it get the video though? Burned to disc? Network? USB? SD-card reader?

I haven't been able to get mkv files to work at all. I did the firmware upgrade and the additions of Youtube and blockbuster are great but there is no way I can get the player to read an mkv file. I tried putting an mkv file on a flash drive and nothing, then I burnt it into a dvd-r and nothing. If anyone has had luck with it please post it.

I have the 1600

I don't think MKV was added with this firmware release.

To quote AVS (about the 1600, my model):

BTW, the Samsung Tech said that Firmware 2.02 is for the following:
-A/V sync issues
-Title compatibility
-NTP should be defaulted to on after reset or power failure
-Error msg "your Netflix Keys have been hacked"
-Blockbuster and YouTube support

^Thanks. I was thinking the same thing because there was no way I could play mkv. Either way it was a great firmware upgrade.

WOW. Just tried it.
AWESOME.
Will it work with an external hard drive plugged to the PC, or am I better to get a SATA drive?

That's great, but I highly doubt that it'll handle the MKVs I encode. I've watched Haali Media Splitter's video bitrate monitor during 1080p MKV playback. The bitrate ranges from 10 kbps (yes, ten) during the completely black screens before the movie starts, to short bursts of ~60Mbps when lots of stuff's happening on screen.

How x264 manages to turn a 35Mbps scene (on blu-ray) into a 60Mbps scene on MKV is beyond me...lol.

You can share any drive in PS3 Media Server.. and I'm betting your external has a SATA drive in it.

so this is basically the best bluray player on the market right now, it beats out paying $$$$ for an htpc for mkv playback. nobody likes the hassle of streaming stuff from a pc wireless to a ps3, you might as well just run it right from the pc itself to the tv why even bother using the ps3 as a middle man?

Lets see they fixed BD-Live so I actually can see people's heads in the Transformers sneak peaks and auditions.
Youtube seems to work.
Blockbuster has been added but I don't have an online account with them.
Netflix is now broken with no video and audio only.
