Too bad this is not a combo player. How hard would that have been? We still have DivX players...

Toshiba seems to abandoning all of their past ideas, HD DVD, XDE...

DivX the MPEG based codec does not equal Divx, the failed DVD format put out by Circuit City in the late 90s.

It is a combo player - it plays DVD and Blu-ray.

Do you really think it should have been both a VHS and Blu-ray player?

as a long HD-DVD supporter, I support this move by Toshiba. a good market player that could contribute to the mass production of blu-ray technology to bring the prices down on the hardware and software side.

I'll get a standalone player probably next year.

Funny man... HD DVD / Blu-ray combo... throw in VHS and I would be fine with that as well... HD DVD/Blu-ray/DVD/CD/VHS... sweeeeeeet! In fact throw in laserdisc and I would buy 2 of them.

Oh HD-DVD?

There can't be much of a market for a new player that will play that format. The added cost to include support for it would likely add a lot of the cost and also confuse the vast majority of the population that would have no interest in HD-DVD.

Honestly? How much would it actually cost Toshiba to include support for HD DVD? It would be a great extension of good faith to loyal customers if they included it.

The fact that they state that this player doesn't support HD DVD might be leaving the door open for a future player that does.

What about SD DVD abilities like the Toshiba HD-XA2? Is XDE abandoned? Do they have something better?

No, Toshiba just released an XD-E600 model, which appears to be basically identical to their earlier E500 except that it adds SD card support.

Even if it had HD DVD I'm not so sure I could trade in my Samsung for it, since I get Reon and netflix with that. I think excluding HD DVD was the best choice. Rather than catering to a minority audience, they instead are unifying around the now existing industry standard for physical high definition video. By going this route they minimize confusion and reap the benifits of having a high def player to pair with their TVs.

But it's not like they could've added "secret" HD DVD support like LG and it's BD hacking ability from the remote. It's not "advertised" but someone found a way to exploit the region lock from the remote. It's not like it can't be done...

At $250 list price, I don't see where they hope to find a market.

Toshiba is brand new to Blu-ray, so they have no history. It's the first generation of their product line, so there's no reputation of past performance. They don't have two tiers of models to appeal to the base audience and a higher-level audience. They don't have access to online services, such as Netflix, Amazon Video on Demand, YouTube, Pandora, etc.

Since they don't mention it, I can't imagine that they will have any exceptional upconversion capability, either with XDE (which is baffling) or the Reon (price point probably can't support it). Same goes for DLNA access.

So, unless they're hoping to be a low-priced player that is a step above Funai and Magnavox, where is the market for a player like this?

I agree about the price, despite my trust of the toshiba brand it's just too expensive it today's market for it's given feature set. It'll need to be under $200.

I agree, no HD DVD, no fancy SD DVD conversion, no online services, still $250?
