This is quite ridiculous. I bet blu-rays will look amazing on a 7 inch screen hahaha. Pointless.

It's not pointless. I dont buy DVD's anymore, I haven't in 2 years. I have a DVD player and screen in my car now so it would nice if I could watch my 300 blu-ray's in the car. It's not about quality on a 7 inch screen, it's about being able to use the format I've invested in.

Yup, this is the situation. The cost of 5000 dollars to grab all those early adopters like yourself who have spent well over 5000 dollars on BD already to buy portability. I imagine the first portable BD players will run upwards for 7-800 dollars.

Most Blu-Ray discs these days come with 'digital download' 2nd discs so you can avoid this problem of portability. I would rather use my iPhone and install movies on that, as opposed to buying a $5000 dollar bluray player for my car.

Here is what the NY Times thought about Panasonic's portable blu-ray player in June:

Unnecessary Tech: Panasonic’s Portable Blu-ray Player

Quote:
Mark this day in your calendar. On June 1, 2009, Blu-ray officially jumped the shark — and you can thank Panasonic for that.

On Monday, the consumer-electronics company announced it was bringing to market the DMP-B15, the world’s first portable Blu-ray player. You read that right. Stunning high-def video and 5.1 surround sound on an 8.9-inch screen and mini-stereo speakers. Let me file that under gizmos you don’t need. Nix that — $800 gizmos you don’t need.

I bet even Panasonic views this product as more of a high-end engineering exercise (akin to Sony’s 11-inch OLED display), than a truly viable product. Who needs hi-def at nine inches? And sure, the B15 can also connect to your HDTV screen with an HDMI cable, but why not just get a standard Blu-ray player for half the price and be done with it? Panasonic’s own DMP-BD60 does everything the portable player does: it can get you online and getting access to BD Live content via Panasonic’s Viera Cast service, and it costs $250. At that price, you can use the money you save opting out of the B15 to buy all those pricey Blu-ray movies.

At $5,000 it's pretty pointless. I think I'd just go and buy that $5 DVD instead, OR with a little know how, RIP that Blu-Ray and put it on a DVD. There is just no way I'm going to spend $5,000 to watch Blu-Ray on a 7" screen let alone a 42" screen. No thanks. Get a Cheap Blu-Ray player and a Power Inverter and a Small LCD screen and there you go for around $300 if you really need Blu-Ray in the Car.

I just got me a family grocery go getter with video etc, and I plan on mounting a wd tv mini into it to play all my files. Panasonic can keep this item.
