Default Oppo BDP-83 playback problems thread

Has anyone else found any discs with playback problems on their new Oppo BDP-83? Please post any discs with playback problems on this thread so we can contact Oppo with the information to help them correct the issues via firmware.

I have only found one disc that will not play properly so far. I updated the firmware to the current firmware and the problem remains.

Firmware version:

Main Version: BDP83-31-0620
Loader Version: BE2403 85752403
Sub Version: MCU83-23-0513

"The Devil's Rejects" freezes the player at 1:28:29 with a hard-freeze that requires a power off. This disc plays without issues on a PS3, Sylvania NB500SL9, and a Magnavox NB530, so the issue is definitely with the Oppo.

Can anyone else with "The Devil's Rejects" play past 1:28:29 on their BDP-83?

EDIT: Here is the current known list of titles that do not work properly:

The Devil's Rejects
The Haunting in Connecticut
12 Rounds
The Towering Inferno

UPDATE:

Oppo has posted the new beta firmware for public use:

Beta Test Version

Release date: July 24, 2009.
Category: Public Beta Release

Main Version: BDP83-34-0722
Loader Version: BE2403 85752403
Sub Version: MCU83-23-0513
Installation Instructions and Download Link: Click Here

To check the firmware version installed on your player, please go to the Setup Menu and select "Device Setup – Firmware Information".

Release Notes:

Based on the previous official release version BDP83-31-0620, the major changes included in this version are:

1. Blu-ray Disc compatibility improvement, especially for certain titles such as "12 Rounds" and "The Haunting in Connecticut".
2. Additional "Deep Color" options utilizing dithering. If the display does not support 36-bit deep color, dithering 36-bit to 30-bit or 24-bit may produce an image that is visually smoother than rounding 36-bit to 30- or 24-bit.
3. Improved precision for color space conversion.
4. Improved upconversion for MKV files that have a picture size smaller than 1280x720 with 24fps frame rate.
5. Improvement for DVD navigation.
6. Other general disc compatibility and performance improvements.

All features and improvements of the previous firmware are also included in this version.

Known Issue:

o After selecting "Reset Factory Defaults" from the "Device Setup" menu, the player may lose video output and stop responding to remote control. Should this happen, please turn off the player, turn it back on, enter the setup menu, and select "Device Setup" - "Persistent Storage" - "Erase BD-Video Data". This should clear the error condition and allow you to reset factory default settings.

Was this an isolated incident with Devil's Rejects, or does it freeze at that same spot every time you try it?

Have you reported this to Oppo?

It happens every single time I try to play the disc. I tried it about 5 times and it freezes at the same exact point each time. I then tried it in three other Blu-ray players and it works in all of them.

I called Oppo, but they aren't open until 11:00am CST. I figured I would ask people for any other titles that aren't working and we can try to iron out as much as possible with them.

Other than "The Devil's Rejects," the Oppo is great. I really like it a lot and I think that the picture and sound are better than the PS3 and the other players I have.

The only two discs that have been identified to give the OPPO a
problem are 12 rounds and The Haunting in Ct.

Have you tried doing a factory reset?

If that doesn't work OPPO should be notified.

I just talked to Oppo and they are aware of the issue with "The Devil's Rejects." He said that it is going to be fixed in a firmware update, but that the update might be a couple of weeks out.

So we now have three discs that are confirmed not to work properly:

The Devil's Rejects
12 Rounds
The Haunting in Connecticut

Please provide any other disc titles that give you problems.

That 12 Rounds problem was discovered on the week of release actually. Java code is what's to blame in this case.

Towering Inferno goes tits up on the Oppo as well. Presents the same issue as 12 Rounds. Sounds like Fox is messing with the chi again.

And Fox doesn't give a f*ck...it's the kinda' thing that almost makes me hope BD or Fox in particular fails, as it would serve them right for that attitude/behavior.

I don't want it to fail, but I just wish Fox would cut the crap. Their attempts to prevent piracy really isn't working. Look around on the 'net and you'll find 1080p versions of this title (and other Fox titles) out there for the taking. But that's another story.

FWIW, Towering Inferno played fine on my Panasonic BD30. Go figure.

sigh, that's strange...and yes, it has to be the copyright fears that drive them the most, but they don't care if it breaks compatibility, which is why Fox deserves to lose.

The sad fact of the matter is that every Blu-ray player on the market will have issues playing some discs. There's no player that can 100% guarantee to play every disc without ever needing a firmware update. Blu-ray and Java authoring are incredibly complex and prone to compatibility issues, especially when the studios (like Fox) constantly change their copy protection protocols.

The good thing about Oppo is that the company is extremely responsive to these sort of issues, and gets to work updating their firmware as soon as these problems are reported.

Did I ever mention how much I hate Java?

I had a problem with Chronicles Of Narnia: Prince Caspian last night.

When I bitstreamed the DTS-HD MA 7.1 soundtrack it had dropouts every few seconds & the level of the speakers were not right.

When I switched to PCM for DTS-HD MA 7.1 everything was fine.

I tried restarting the player & disc & it did it everytime. Has anyone else had problems with bistreaming the DTS-HD MA 7.1 soundtrack on this disc?
