The Sherwood BDP 5003 has been confirmed to be Momitsu multi-region capable - a forum member picked his up already and tried the Momitsu remote codes and it worked.

Since there seems to be a number of different models out there, I changed the thread title to "Momitsu Clones Multi-Region Blu-ray players" to open up the discussion for all the various brands and models.

I hope that more people take advantage of region free players, it really is the way to go.

With this kind of variety and at these prices. Once the word is out, I think that will be a formality...

A HUGE reason for me NOT getting into blu yet is the BS region coding...I want a region free player like was/is...And I don't mean a player that I have to switch regions for each different region disc I may play...

Me too cheez. I'm personally very happy to see so many clones of the Momitsu with varying features at varying prices that are more in the reach of most people. Hail all clones of Momitsu and of course Momitsu itself for region-free player heaven.

do you have a list of your imported HD DVD movies so we can ascertain just how much benefit you would get out of a region free blu-ray player? It really isn't that difficult to take 10 seconds and change the region code... I promise.

Ya know Splicer that's no reason at all for not getting into blu-ray. If anything that's the reason FOR getting into blu. So you have to change the codes on the remote - how's that a big deal?

Yeah in a more perfect world there wouldn't be region coding but that's not the world we live in right now and until a new format comes along that might not use region coding, this is the best it gets.

Do yourself a favor and grab one of these that best suits your needs. I promise you will be very very happy.

At these prices, it'll be worth it to adapt. The day they make a legit all region player, that's the day you'll be paying full premium prices.

These players sound really top notch. I wouldn't mind getting hold of something similar for Region A playback (Australia is B).

Hey Lone Gunmen,
Maybe I'm being a little presumptuous but I would think the NTSC to PAL converter would also work in reverse for SD-DVD content.
As far as blu-ray goes I can't see a problem because you change the region by using the remote control.
The only thing you would need would be an electric converter as these players are both 110 and 220 so just a converter would be needed I think.

Yeah i think i'd need a power converter.

I have however found a SoniQ brand blu-ray player for $300 Australian that is region free once you enter the remote code, might use it exclusively for American discs.

Actually, I know the Momitsu has a 100-240 Volt, 50/60Hz power supply and just checked the VisionQuest manual and it says the same thing. So all of these clones most likely have a versatile power supply, you would just need an adapter for the 2 prong power cord used for North American models.

Since the Sherwood and others have surfaced as similar to the Momitsu and other higher end badges of these players and all seem to have the same region free ability, the big difference seems to be with the decoding of HD sound, internal VS external.

I'm wondering if this is a hardware issue, or perhaps a software issue?

In a way software would make sense to me, since the manufacturers would have to pay for rights to use the HD sound decoders and the players like the Sherwood are bottom basement in prices with wholesale cost around $50.

If it is hardware then the low end players would lack ability no matter what.

Any ideas?
