First off the packaging on this thing is really, really nice. It reminds me of how apple packs their stuff. great attention to detail!

very good looking player, I really like the brushed anodized finish. boot up time is very fast.
I really did not do much other than skip around on the disk some (which is very fast and smooth compared to my bd35)

I am getting ready to go home in a few minutes and set up the player and run through the included spears and munsil disk and will report back after that
Any chance you can post back with an evaluation of it's upscaling capabilities? I'm expecting that's where this player will just utterly blow your socks off, not that the rest of it's functionality is anything to sneeze at.

It really doesn't sound like you'll benefit much from it.At this price this player really is for people who want the best upconversion and multiple format playback.
I'm sure the mkv thing will work just as well as every other format it plays.
Their top line dvd player plays avi's amazingly well from disc and from usb port and this blu ray player has same capability.

I agree, without DVD-A and SACD, which IMO are the biggest secondary feature draw for this player, I don't see a compelling reason if you are looking to spend less on a player. Next being the upscaling and if you don't have a lot of DVDs either...well why bother watching SD DVDs anymore anyway?

The sound quality of this player is what impresses me most. It does a great job with SACD and DVD-A.

I have a PS3 and the PQ is about the same with BDs so far.

There may be some advantage in higher quality analoge audio if he happens to not have an HDMI capable amp. That's the main other reason I can think of to pony up the extra bux for this player. Otherwise I'd recommend a more mainstream bluray player.

My receiver doesn't have HDMI and I do have a fair number of SACD and DVD-As, which is exactly why I was waiting for this player. It was worth the wait.

Anyway, would love to get one of these players, but the only place I can buy it now has it for pre-order at $638!

So, to anyone out there who has tried one, is it worth it? I have a PS3 and BH200 for my Blu-ray playing duties. I don't have a big library of DVDs and I don't have any SACD discs or DVD Audio discs. The MKV support sounds cool, but I wonder if it's as good as my Popcorn Hour NMT. Has anyone tried out the MKV side of things?
Coming from a QDEO-based player, you're likely not going to see a night and day difference (with REON).

Thanks for the info guys. I guess it's kind of what I was thinking...

I don't have many SDVDs, so the upscaling isn't that important.

That said, maybe I could sell my PS3 and put the money towards the Oppo and start buying DVDs and SACDs I have a terrible urge to spend my money on toys...

I'd be using it on a 92" screen.

I had assumed in the range of 50". If using a projector, YMMV indeed. It all depends on who you ask. I even know of an BH200/projector owner (at AVS) who prefers QDEO to REON. Horses for courses and all that.

I also have a 92" and personally noticed a difference. It is true, however, that there won't be a night and day difference. Again, it all depends if you are willing to spend the money for the last 10% of performance. It also depends how many options your upscaling processor has open. For instance, my projector uses the Reon and has MNR, BNR, CTI, Sharpness and Detail Enhancement. I find that I can fine tune and get a better result then using something like an XA2 with limited tweaks available. If you plan on getting DVD's and SACD's then I would definitely go with the OPPO. By all accounts it's an amazing player and has the ability to play nearly every format.

I only had a chance to listen to a few SACD's (sent as DSD to my receiver) which sounded amazing btw and I watched U-571 on .
This is my first time seeing this movie since it was in the theaters and I was really impressed with the audio and video. I don't know how much of it was the player or just the quality of the movie but it looked very good, the blacks in particular really did look inky black but not having seen this movie on my old bd35 I cant really say how it compares.
I am going to put in Dark Knight tomorrow as I am most familiar with the look of that movie and see if I can tell a difference. Also I am going to give it a thorough workout with sd dvd. I am thinking Star Wars, Empire Strikes Back and maybe Jedi before the end of weekend and I will report back

PS two small things that I like about my bd35 better is the location of the eject button which is on an angle facing up, my player is very close to the floor so its easier to press the button to close the door.
Also the bd35 has an auto dimming mode that you can turn on which automatically dims the display when the movie is playing. Not a big deal but it is a nice little touch. I would love to see the oppo implement that feature in a future update.

Not to get off topic, but the XA2 has 3 sets of picture controls that
can be saved with the following available adjustments in each set.

- Contrast
- Brightness
- Color
- Tint
- Selective Color Enhancement
- Edge Enhancement
- Mosquito NR*
- Block NR*
- Random NR*

* The noise reduction features are not functional on HD DVD discs.

I agree about getting the OPPO, especially if SACD's and DVD's are
a desire for some.

I'm glad you are enjoying your OPPO.

You should email OPPO your feature requests, they listen to their
customers. I don't think the eject button will be done but the auto
dimming feature sounds possible.

Btw, there is a dimmer button on the remote.

If you've used the XA2 you'll know that while the tweaks are there, they are very broad and unable to fine tuned.

I've had good results with a combination of the Edge Enhancement
and some of the noise reduction options. Of course it depends on
the dvd your viewing.

Although I enjoy the Reon in the XA2 very much I have been strictly
using the OPPO for all playback.
