Well, I may finally buy a Blu-ray player.
Ever since HD-DVD lost, I've been patiently waiting for blu-ray to catch up to HD-DVD in terms of technology (firmware updates, BD-Live), and price.
Today i'm looking at some of the deals for a Sony BDPS350 and they look very tempting. I still have ONE final question needing to be answered before I buy this SOB.
When I had HD-DVD I had one of Toshiba's HD-A2 players. Now the best thing about the A2 was that if you were using an optical cable instead of an HDMI cable for your audio, the A2 would decode ANY lossless audio track, like True Dolby or DTS HD, into a 1.5 Mbps DTS track.
So the million dollar question is (sorry if this is easily found on Sony's website or something, I just want a clear cut answer) What does the Sony BDPS350 decode lossless audio tracks into if you're using an optical cable rather than an HDMI cable?
Thanks! -

You will either get the DD track (640K) or the DTS core (1.5) depending on the title.

Damnit, that's exactly what I was afraid of.
Are there any Blu-ray players that decode to 1.5 Mbps even if the disc's lossless audio is True Dolby? -

I believe the A2 was the only HD DVD player to do that.
I know the A3, A30, and A35 didn't do that.
The good news is, all the DTS HD MA will be heard at DTS 1.5 Mbps, so thats good.
But yes, you'll only get the Dolby Digital core track, not TrueHD converted to DTS.
OF COURSE, all of this will be completely irrelevant when Receivers that decode DTS HD MA and True HD are regularly $199, which will come soon enough.

Yeah, thats why I loved the A2 so much and why I was pissed so much when HD-DVD lost.
One year later and I still wont be getting audio quality as good as the A2 without having to spend more money on a new receiver, at least when the disc's audio track is Dolby.
Thanks for the replies guys.
