    Default Ironman, lack of bass?

    Hello, newbie around this place.

Well, I had this kinda of let down with the IronMan BlueRay (Ive got the pale blue ones) and Im sure it has to do with some hardware things:

    1. Reproduction comes from a PS3.
    a) Video goes by HDMI, no probs on image.
    b) Sounds goes through A/V to external Sony Home Teather (old one). (No
optical port) (the model escapes my mind at this time).

During the movie, when an explosion or heavy bass action was supposed to be happening.... it came very mildly, not rumbling... it was like if the bass volumen was low, but then again cant be adjusted much. Other movies sound just fine.

Could it be that the True HD Track is too much for my poor Home Theather to handle? PS3 needs firmware update? Need a new HomeTheater system?

Been reading about turning DRC off, have to dig into my manual.. and see what it has to say about it.

    Any ideas are appreciated,

    Thanks.

i think i know what ur talking about and yes it was a little bit on the mild side if u ask me. i dont have a sub yet but compared to some other movies it wasnt over the top like i expected. i even played that scene back at higher volume to make sure.

It might be how you're hooking it up. If it's just with the red/white stereo cables, you're not gonna get all of the discrete channels. It will be downmixed to 2 channels, which is compatible with Dolby Pro Logic standards.

I'm sure others will attest to this, but there is plenty of bass on this disc. I was actually commenting to a friend that the LFE might be some of the strongest I've ever had in my house!

(FWIW, I'm running TrueHD decoded to PCM over HDMI.)

no need to check the manual. just go the ps3 xmb and go to the BD settings. scroll all the way down until you see the option to change the DRC settings from on to off, and auto.just turn it off. the only time to use that is late at night when you don't wanna wake anyone up.

i know mine is hooked up correctly. im not sure if it has to do with the ps3? seeing as how most of my recent watching has been hd dvds via an a35.

    Thanks for the quick responses.

Yeah, I only connect it through the red/white cable to the home theater, is the only way it can be connected. (I didnt realize at the time of purchase, it did not have an optical audio in... stupid me).

Ill check the PS3 settings on the DRC tonight, and see how it goes.

    Thanks again.

I would put a nickel on it being DRC. (times are tough. )

I think DRC is automatically set to on or auto on the PS3 unless you turned it off, but I could be wrong.

what kind of sub are you using? because lower quality subs cant reproduce low bass as well (or at all). can you hear the really low bass thumping from the aftershock of the jericho missiles?

It is getting downmixed to stereo then and you are more or less losing the benefit of the .1 channel for the most part. The fact is, this disc is mixed a little hot on the LFE if anything. It was shaking everything in my place. Also, are you using a sub or just large mains? If you don't have an optical input, then the system is stereo or prologic? If prologic, your bass isn't going to be as impressive as a discrete system.

Yeah, I just checked my buddies tonight and his was on "Auto". He said he doesn't remember ever changing it, so I think it was at that setting as default. We did a before and after, it was a noticeable difference on Iron Man.

If there's one thing Dolby TrueHD can reproduce, its bass. This movie had plenty. Also if i'm not mistaken; Isn't it true that DRC is n/a when it comes to Blu Ray or HD DVDS.Regardless,it should always be turned off.

I would also look at the 'bass redirection' option of your receiver should it have one. You might want to increase the cutoff frequency especially if you're not using full range speakers.

I have my PS3 and Onkyo 605 set up properly and the sound sucks! It's the biggest let-down of any hi-def movie I've bought this year. Hardly any surround action and there's just no low end to even feel. All of my settings are correct too!
