Default Video noise with Sony BDP s350

Hi I just purchased Sony BDP s350 as a standalone blu ray player after my ps3 quit working ( no warranty). Another reason why I bought a stand alone is because of a lot of video noise while watching blus with the PS3. However, it seems as if the noise is almost worst on the BDP. It appears as white specs flickering on and off the screen particularly evident during dark scenes (and the entire 300 movie). My question is does anyone else see this white flickering noise? Is it just worst on some movies? I dont know if its the player, my television (Olevia 537H set @ 1080i) onkyo 606 receiver or my hdmi cable(cheaper ones from monoprice.com) anyone know its kinda annoying seeing it all the time. HD DVDs never had this problem I miss you.

300 was shot with grain and is supposed to look that way. I know that the 606 is supposed to make video quality worse than just hooking direct to the tv also. Try hooking it direct to the tv and see if that makes any difference.

Sounds like a faulty HDMI cable to me. Try another one.

I tried hooking it up to another 1080P tv and it seems the 'white noise" went away. It must be the tv, im wondering if it is because of it being 1080i instead of 1080p?

Well, I can't say anything about the 350 because I don't own one, but I have a 60 GB PS3 hooked up to a onkyo 606 and I see no such noise. I actually have an HDMI cable from monoprice.com as well. I also have some from shop4tech.com. None of them have given me problems at all and are not faulty. My TV isn't 1080p but blu-rays look amazing on my 55" 1080i TV. I'm happy with it like that. So, it probably is a faulty cable or you got a bad receiver.

There is nothing inherent about Blu-ray that requires white noise, you definitely have a problem unrelated to the format, either your specific player is faulty or you have something else in the chain that causes this. I have both Blu-ray and HD DVD and given exactly the same data on the disc, the differences in retrieving the data and passing it to a display are none.

After reading that the noise went away when trying a different set, my next suggestion would be checking the sharpness setting on your TV. It should be either at minimum, or at the lowest setting before the set starts blurring the image. On my projector, that point is at the half-way mark.

You can check your sharpness settings with the test images on Sony BDs, or dedicated test discs.

My guess would be after reading these two posts is that your settings
on your tv need some adjusting. It sounds like your brightness setting
is too high.

Also, make sure your are bypassing the video processor in your Onkyo
when watching Blu-ray because this could be the source of the problem
also. Try connecting directly to your tv from the player and see if you
still get video noise. If you still do than its not the Onkyo and its
probably your settings.

I use Monoprice cables and have never had a problem with them, but
I guess it is possible that one may be bad.

And lastly, the movie 300 has film grain in it by design, it is what the
director intended.

So after over a year dealing with this issue I finally found out what was wrong. I had the Sharpness on my TV set to the maximum which must of been causing the noise. I have now lowered it and Wa La the picture looks perfect!!

Many of the Disney discs such as Ratatouille have a THX test patterns that allow you to do basic calibration. If you sharpness was that far off, you may have other settings out of whack as well. I also recommend DVE BD Basics disc.
