Default loud popping sound when playing Harold and Kumar 2 on PS3

I was watching Harold and Kumar 2 the other day on my PS3. I was playing the DTS-HD MA track and occasionally it would make a loud hissing noise in my speakers. I was scared cuz I thought it had ruined the speakers. . But then I put in a few movies with different codecs (Batman Begins Dolby HD) and POTC (PCM). I also put in a few movies with DTS-HD MA tracks such as I, Robot and Master and Commander. They both worked fine and were clear as a bell. Could it be something wrong with the way the audio was mastered? When I played Pan's Labyrinth on the PS3 it didn't make the loud hissing noises. Perhaps it's just the movie. Good thing I rented it. A bad movie gets a bad audio transfer

BTW, I have an Onkyo 606 as my receiver (down below)

Oh really? Is it just with that movie? I would say it happened like 6 or 7 times throughout the movie, it was really weird. I've also played The Golden Compass Blu-ray and it worked perfectly too...

see thread in blu-ray hardware forum on this issue.
It's called the "bitstream bomb"
it is a receiver issue and requires a firmware update.
look above your thread!

Well, I'm using a PS3, so it can't bitstream the codecs. They're sent as decoded PCM. So, I think it's the movie's fault because all the movies that I've tried that have DTS-MA tracks work fine, as long as its decoded to PCM. Now, I'm scared to bitstream these tracks once I buy a standalone blu-ray player... But should these issues be resolved since I have a 606? and not a 605? hopefully?

oh ok.
sorry for the confusion.
hmmmmm...............honestly I don't know what the problem might be then, but
perhaps someone with a PS3 knows more.
I would still do the firmware update for the receiver if you haven't already, and see if that perhaps helps.
btw: the firmware fix totally resolves the problem so I wouldn't worry at all about bitstreaming once you have applied the update.
Can't remember if the 606 needs the update or not.
the above info from avsforum.com should tell though.

Its probably the movie although, Ive read some issues on the "popping" sound. I have the 605 reciever and I also rock the Ps3 as my Blu player. Now, Ive never had any of these issues that you have mentioned and what ive read. I do know tht my reciever does not need a firmware update because I looked up my model number and I was also sure that it wasnt going to need one because I purchased my reciever late into the year. Now, If you have the 605 reciever, you might want to follow up and see if it still needs that firmware update. Not all movies are going to have the popping sound.

If the PS3 is doing the decoding and you are sending it to the amp via PCM, it shouldn't be a problem with the amp. The "DTS bomb" only happens when you bitstream to the onkyo amp and only on certain titles. I know for sure some of the titles you mentioned are ones that have the DTS bomb, like Master and Commander.

As was said above, you can do a firmware update to correct this issue. You can go here for instructions on how to perform this update..

I looked at the forums and there doesn't seem to be an update for the 606. well, I've yet to bitstream the HD codecs, so I wouldn't know. I just bitstream the core DTS tracks on movies that have DTS-MA audio to compare between the core and the actual lossless track. Never ever happened there. I honestly think it was just the movie because I've played lots of movies and the only one that did that was Harold and Kumar 2. Hopefully, when I get my standalone, it won't do that...

Bitstreaming would be the only time it would happen, so if you aren't doing that, I would agree with you that it's probably the disc itself.

Its the movie and only happens in 7.1. The dude change the movie seems to be the cause as it happens when the menu would come up.

I'm gonna try out Shoot 'Em Up tonight. Since it also has 7.1 DTS-MA track, I will see if does make those much-maligned popping noises. I'll let you guys know. Anybody having any other problems with the New Line BD's? besides Pan's Labyrinth and the Orphanage? Fox BD's?

So, I popped in Shoot 'Em Up and it worked fine. No issues at all when I listened to the 7.1 DTS-MA track. This confirms that it was the movie and not the receiver.

I believe the loud popping noise is an ONKYO/PS3 combination as this never hapenned to me with the BH200/Onkyo 605 and Bh200/Denon 3808 or even 3808/PS3 combination.

That might be, but the only movie that's done that so far (on my set-up) is Harold and Kumar 2. All my DTS-MA 's work perfectly when using the PS3. Do you think future updates will or might have already fixed the problems with these DTS-MA tracks?
