PS3 Will Not Read BD Discs

Hey everyone. I haven't really posted on here since early in the year, but I just recently bought my first PS3 and was hoping that everyone would be kind enough as to give me some tech support.

I bought the PS3 USED on Ebay, but the guy said it worked perfectly, and it did come out of the original packaging in perfect "looking" condition. However, it will not load Blu-rays at all, specifically games, as I don't have any movies yet. Many times, it will not even recognize that I've loaded the disc. When it does, it never makes it past the loading screen before freezing up the system completely. The kicker is that it plays DVDs fine. System is fully updated, and I even reformatted the HDD.

I've already filed a complaint with the guy who sold it to me, but I wanted opinions from people who have owned PS3s. Do you know what the problem could be, or how I could go about fixing it? Thanks for any help in advance.

What version of firmware are you on?

2.42 I believe.

When I go into system update, it says I am fully updated. When I check out the Version information under System Settings, it says "2.42"

Is there any graphical artifacting on screen when it freezes?

Hey you definitely need to get your money back. I have the same problems with my PS3 as it works fine but will not read any discs. It is unfixable I have tried everything. I have the latest firmware, did a full system restore and even took it apart to clean the actual blu ray lens. None of this works. I am out of warranty and my only option is to send it back to Sony for $150 or so to have it fixed. The seller should of known this as it didnt all of a sudden happen to me it gradually happened. It started to freeze during playback of movies and then eventually did not read discs at all. I would be sure to follow up with the complaint and get your money back!

Nope. Just acts like it's loafing the disc (blinking yellow light and all) and then eventually the yellow light stops blinking and nothing happens.

Do you know when it was originally purchased? Is it still under warranty? IMHO this is the sellers responsibility assuming that it was sold as a working PS3 with no "as is" disclaimers. If you do not hear back soon file a dispute.

I've heard back from the seller and he's unwilling to offer a refund. I cannot open a dispute until tomorrow, so I'm just weighing my options until then. According to him, the PS3 was purchased in Nov. 2007 and should still be under warranty. Unfortunately, he did not include the original purchase receipt with the PS3, and SCEA will not accept any PS3's for repair without this.

His tone in responding to my questions is leading me to believe that he knowingly sold a defunct PS3 to me and is trying to get out of his responsibilities. I was able to connect to the internet and download a demo of Echochrome. I played it fine with no hiccups or freezing. That, to me, leads me to believe that it is an issue with the lens or the drive itself.

Are there two separate lenses in a PS3 - one for BD and one for DVD - or just one? It seems odd that it would play DVDs perfectly if there were just one.

Did you pay with Paypal? If you did, start a charge back until the issue is resolved. Even if the guy sent you the receipt and it was still under warranty, I wouldn't repair it. I'd expect a refund. He was supposed to send you a working ps3. And, from what you've told us, it sounds like he knew he sold you a buggy unit. Any reputable ebayer would give you your money back.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I did pay through PayPal, but I don't know what a charge back is. I was planning on opening a dispute through the dispute console, but I cannot do that until 10 days after cleared payment (tomorrow).
