Default PS3 set to 720p, Projector showing 1080p/24

I have a Panasonic AX-100U projector. PS3 hooked via HDMI through a Yamaha RX-V2700 to the Panny. The projector is 720p, so in experimenting with the settings, I set to 720p. In the PS3 menus, when I check the Panny menu it shows 720p, but when the Blu Ray starts it shows as 1080p/24 coming in. The projector can handle 1080p/24 and downscale to its native 720p, so it plays ok, but was just wondering why the PS3 was not scaling the BluRay down to 720p like I asked it. The Yamaha has scaling turned off, the HDMI is just pass through, so that is not the issue.

Do you have 1080p24 turned on in the PS3 menus? It's likely that the console is "handshaking" with the projector to find out its maximum accepted resolution. When the projector confirms that it can accept 1080p24, the PS3 sends it that way.

I don't have a PS3 so can't tell you exactly how to turn this off, but on other Blu-ray players there are separate settings for Resolution and for 1080p24 yes/no.

I have the PS3 connected to a Panasonic PT-AE900U through a Yamaha RX-V663 and Josh is right, you need to turn off the PS3 setting for auto detech highest resolution or 1080/24p. I think I like having the PS3 output 1080/24p to my projector, but the difference isn't much if anything. I hope there isn't a bug with recent PS3 firmware that defaults to 1080/24p, if you can't get it turned off and stay that way, let me know and I will check mine with firmware ver. 2.42, at least I think that is what I recently downloaded.

Thanks for the reply Josh. When I did the initial setup, the PS3 auto setup set the resolution at 1080p, so 1080p/24 was passed. I am getting a flash across the screen every few minutes, and I thought that maybe my 30ft HDMI cable was struggling with the bandwidth of 1080p, so I wanted to scale down to 720p to see if the flash went away, plus also to test the downscaling of the PS3 vs. that of the Panny.

I go into the video menu of the PS3, and choose manual setup instead of auto (working from memory here, I think I have this right), and I uncheck the 1080 boxes, leaving the 720p checked as the highest resolution. Sure enough, streaming video and the XMB show as 720p, but my Spiderman 3 keeps sending 1080p/24. I know the PS3 had a downscaling issue with 720 at one point, not sure what might be happening here.

As per my post above, I tried to force it manually to 720p. XMB and streaming are 720, Blu Ray still 1080p/24. I am on firmware 2.41.

I will go check right now and report back, although I know I used to be able to send 720p, I don't recall checking since this recent update.

If you go to settings>display>video output settings>custom>check highest 720p, I don't see how you can get beyond 720p, I can't.

As god is my witness, I have it set to 720p. And the Panny still shows 1080p/24 for BluRay movies.

I had to bring my AX100U in for service today, I have a flicker that is likely related to the infamour iris issue with this projector, so I can't check again right now.

So you have the PS3 set at 720p, and when playing a Blu Ray, your TV shows the incoming resolution as 720p?

Yes, my PT-AE900U shows 720p. Are you sure you have done what I stated? Follow these steps:

Settings
Display
Video Output Settings
HDMI
Custom, not automatic
don't check above 720p

Save the settings.

Yes, that is what I did. I will check again when my projector gets fixed.

I know that if you hold down the power button when the PS3 comes on, until the 2nd beep, it will reset the PS3 to the native resolution of the display unit, but I know I am not doing that. I am not sure what is going on.

Turns out there is a setting on the PS3 to force 1080p/24 for BD Discs that have it, regardless of other settings. Answered my own question...

Yeah its not in the display options menu, 1080/24p auto/on/off is in BD/DVD settings menu.

I will say one thing for the PS3, it is a flexible machine, there is a $hitload of settings it seems.
