Default PS3 set up correctly but still windowboxing my DVD's

OK, maybe it isn't set up correctly? On display settings I have it set to 1080p (which my TV supports), and on BD/DVD settings, I have upconversion set to "double scale", which according to:

http://www.us.playstation.com/PS3/Ne...81_update.html

is what I need. Blu Ray movies look great, but DVD's all windowbox at this setting (a letterboxed image inside a 4x3 window - like it's an old non-anamorphic dvd). Weirdly, when I set upscale to "off" then I get the normal anamorphic image I expect.

I'm using an HDMI cable so don't know what else I can do. So what am I missing here? FYI BluRay looks beautiful on my screen so my cable and TV are definitely not the problem.

Is there a PS3 owner home on a saturday night who can help? I'd be very grateful!!

Choose normal. It presents the image in the natural aspect ratio of the dvd. (upscaled automatically by your tv) Choose Full Screen for it to be scaled to the size of your tv (which it sounds like you want) though I personally wasn't happy with the look of my picture using this setting.

Thanks for the reply! Yeah, after some more trial and error, normal does work best for regular dvd's.

But does this mean that I need to switch my settings back and forth between double scale and normal depending on whether I'm watching a blu ray or regular dvd? If so, that's kind of weak.

It upconverts perfectly when set to "normal." (But then SD extras on Blu-ray are not upscaled at all, which confuses me. What's that about?)

I've got the Westinghouse TX-42F430S 42" 1080p LCD. I know you may have heard bad things about it, but I've got to tell you: Never buy the Westinghouse TX-42F430S 42" 1080p LCD.

And what's the point of "double scale"? The PS3 info at the sony site says double scale works only with 1080p TV's. So then what's the difference between double scale and normal for a blu ray disc?

Seems like Sony could make this a lot easier to figure out...

Yeah, the setting names are not very technically specific (not a big surprise, considering how they describe "CineMotion."). Looks like futzing around with it and seeing what happens is the only answer. I'm hoping one of them upconverts DVDs and also sends out anamorphic standard-def BD extras as something other than squished 480i/p.
