Default Another Review of the Pansonic bd-50!!

another strong review.
no the upconverting of regular dvds is still not the best.
but HD audio and video performance is excellent.
and that's what really matters ok.

All of the reviews that mention the PS3 at less money as a reason for other players being priced too high sure misses the point. The PS3 is sold at a huge loss, so buy it if it works for you. If it doesn't, then you must buy something else at cost plus a profit margin. If the DMP-BD50 is too high priced compared to other comparable standalone players, it won't sell well and that is the competition. For anybody that can make the PS3 work to suit their needs, it is a better deal, no question. Is the DMP-BD50 overpriced, I can't tell yet, but when the other Profile 2.0 players are available we will have a better idea.

The high electricity cost alone to run the PS3 makes it more expensive than the BD50. Add in the higher noise level and the huge size of the PS3 and the BD50 is a much, much better deal.

Once I get a BD50 to replace my BD30, a Blu-ray Disc will never touch my PS3 again.

OMG that had to be one of the more poorly written reviews I have ever read.

More errors:

The BD50 does not replace the BD30, it is in addition to it.

The MSRP is $599, not $699!

The electricity cost is like nothing. If you base it at $0.10/kWh, then it costs you $0.022 more per movie to run it on the PS3 (figuring 2 hours per movie). In other words, you're looking at less than $0.50 for an entire month of movies, if you watch heavily (22 movies). Adjust accordingly for your electricity rate, but the most it's going to come out to be is a few cents per movie.

Now, loudness is a different story.

I still haven't figured out why there are all the comments from many sources about the PS3 being so noisy. The one I used to have ran so quietly that I hardly knew it was on. I've gone to be many a night forgetting to turn it off, only to realize the next morning that it was still running when I saw the little green light on the front glowing.

It isn't noisy at all in my opinion. I have to move my head within a couple feet to hear it and that is with my 80GB, with my 40GB, I have never heard it at all. As far as electricity, it is pennies a month in additional cost compared to other players for Blu-ray playback and there is no way it will cost $200 in additional electricity to operate it over its lifetime.

I accept it is true that it is noisier and does use more electricity, what I don't accept is that the difference is great enough to matter at all. I have both standalone players and the PS3 and I wouldn't be surprised if the additional electricity for the slow standalone players to boot up and load a disc makes up for the additional electricity used by the PS3 while the players are running. What might matter is design and running temperature for some installations. The odd design doesn't work for everyone and the PS3 needs to be in the open and well ventilated to run cool.

The MSRP was originally $699, but Panasonic recently dropped it to $599.

The retail sites list the retail price at $699. some sites, like Crutchfield, sell it for $699 although many retailers also have it for $599 while also listing the retail price at $699.

the original retail price was supposed to be $599 and they raised it to $699.
If they have actually changed the retail price again and dropped it to $599, then Pansonic needs to tell the retailers this.

I agree.
maybe Panasonic should let retailers know the supposed price because I'm not seeing it listed for $599 anywhere either.
I'm concentrating on getting a good price on that all region dual player right now, so it could be a while till I can start thinking about this one though.

I want this bad. I am seriously considering selling off my PS3 now. Just can not seem to decide if the BD50 is worth the extra $300 over the BD30 yet.

Dude I'm telling you if you don't care about profile 2.0 the BD30 is freaking awesome! I'm 1000 times happier with it than with my PS3 or my BD-P1400. I'm sure the BD50 is pretty f*n sick but if you don't need internal DTS-MA decoding or 2.0 then quit debating it and trade your PS3 for a BD30 like I did.

Yeah, using electricity cost is pretty weak, on an individual analysis. At 2 hours per movie and 22 movies per month, it would cost like $9.77 per year, vs. a standalones $1.43 per year. So you save about $8.34 per year, if you watch that many movies.

But on a macro scale, if you say 400,000 PS3's are used just for BD playback (@22 movies/mo), then that is a collective waste of $3.34 million in electric, or over 33 million wasted kWh per year, enough to power 3097 average homes in the US for an entire year.

Or, this way.. When burned, the average tree produces the equivelent of 12 kWh of energy, so that would be like burning 2.75 million trees uneccesarily. The average forest has 200-400 trees per acre, so let's say 300. So that is like burning 9167 acres of forest when you don't need to... per year.

So from a green stand point, it may not be a high cost per individual, but it is very wasteful as a whole...
