Default BD-30 N0 24fps Option

Probably a stupid question but here goes:

I am running HDMI through a Onkyo 606 to a 720p JVC set. When I go into the BD30 setup menu, I see the option for 24fps, but can't access it.

Is it possibly because of my TV, or am I doing something else wrong in the setup menu of the BD30?

Thanks

When you connect two components by HDMI, they must "handshake" with one another, during which they trade information about their capabilities. If the player detects that the TV can't accept a 1080p24 input, that option will be grayed out and unavailable for you.

1080p24 wouldn't benefit you on a 720p set, in any case.

So does that mean that the receiver must be 1080p24 capable or does it just pass the image to the TV?

The receiver must also be capable of receiving and transmitting a 1080p24 signal. If it can't, it will handshake back to the player to tell it to step down to the next available resolution.

That's what I figured. Just wanted to make sure.

Thank you.

Conversely, I assume that's the problem I had using the BD-30 with an Onkyo 605 receiver and TV that only accepts a max 1080i input? If I didn't have the receiver & TV power up to the BD-30's output before powering on the BD-30, it would default to 1080p - resulting in a blank screen on my TV. I had to keep a composite video cable connected to be able to get into Setup and set it down to 1080i resolution when I forgot to power up the TV & receiver first.

The PS3 doesn't do that - I can start it up, feed it a BD while watching TV and let it play all the trailers, etc. Then I can switch to it and Press play & start the movie. That's the main reason I got rid of my BD-30. I like my TV and am not going to upgrade for some time.

Yes, the handshaking extends all the way down the chain.

Why didn't you just set your BD30 for 1080i output if that's all your TV will accept?

I did set it for 1080i output - but if you don't have the receiver & TV powered up before powering up the player, with no handshaking response the BD30 reverts to "Auto" mode and defaulted back to 1080p output.
