Default 720p and Blu-Ray questions

Forgive me if this has already been posted( I am a little lazy with thread searches). Anyway, I am researching for a 32'' HDTV for my bedroom. Originally, I thought I wanted to go with 1080p but...after factoring in the amount of time it would be used and the viewing distance( 7.5 feet), I am not so sure this is a priority. Found a Sharp 32'' 1080p HDTV for $900(on sale) at BB. Also found a Sharp, Sony, Vizio, and Samsung 720p HDTV's in the $600-$690 range at Walmart. I want a player for sure.Maybe a . So...here is what I am wondering:

1) How does look on a 720p set?? Is it worth it, for my situation, to go 720p or 1080p??

2) How does games look on a 720p??

Thank you for all responses.

Hi!

At that screen size, you'll probably notice it on some games (because of the fonts size) but its unlikely you'll notice it on movies.

Mmm... Anyways, most of the times TVs that are 720p are 1080i too, so you could play games in 1080i and view movies in 720.

My advice is go for it. You could use the saved bucks for an Onkyo SR606 and you'll be all set. At that screen size, really, you should see no real difference. And most games on PS3 are 720p only (few games actually support native 1080), so...

My first Hi Def set was a Samsung 4692 720p LCD, which was once their top set prior to the release of their first 1080p resolutions a few weeks afterwards (D'oh!). I picked up a PS3 to handle both the gaming and Blu-ray elements, and I was nothing but pleased with the performance on 'only' 720p resolution. Both games and movies look great in the lower resolution, and I use my own experiences to help customers overcome any preconceived notions regarding Blu-ray and 720p.

I've since upgraded to the 46" Samsung A650, but my first Sammy is still churning out Blu-ray from the bedroom.

I say try it...The Sharp is a waste of money in 1080p. Go with a 32" 720p and Blu-ray. Best Buy used to sell a 32" Panasonic LCD that could be had for $800 and had 120 hz technology. I'd take that (or even the replacement with 60 hz) over the Sharp any day of the week.

Refer to the infamous chart.

[For a 50" screen]:

Quote:
For the same screen size, the benefits of 1080p vs. 720p start to become apparent when closer than 9.8 feet and become full apparent at 6.5 feet.
In other words, for a 32" set from 7.5 feet away, 720p is perfectly acceptable.

Also keep in mind there aren't many 1080p native games for the PS3.

I'm a 720p-er on my Samsung 46" DLP. I watch from about 8-9 feet away. I've never seen a 1080p tv in action, but I've never felt like I'm missing anything while watching a BD or HDDVD or TV. I have 20-13 vision, so my eyes are pretty good and even still, I feel like I've got a darn nice picture. I know this isn't a scientific answer, but hope it helps.

720p can be fine.
my Kuro is actually 768p but blows away most if not all non-Kuro 1080p sets.
for that screen size do not worry at all.
just get the best set possible.
btw: I would get a plasma for sure if you want the best type of display for movies. plasmas look far more cinema-like vs "cartoony" looking lcds imo.

I have thought about plasma for the price and better colors. But I am still skeptical about burn-in and overheating..especialy with the budget I am using.

Don't worry about burn in. Image Retention maybe, which is also apparent on LCD's.

I also vote for 720p plasma. Having seen my buddies Sammy 4671f LCD and my "old" Sammy HP-S5053 Plasma, I'd pick Plasma every time. His picture is insane but I just prefer the look of plasma over and LCD I've seen. Even though my TV is at least 3 years old and only 1366x768, if it was only capable of displaying 24fps (I hate stuttering) I would have no need to upgrade. Beautiful picture.
