Blu-ray Is My Setup Alright?

Hi folks. I am entirely new with this type of stuff, and have been reading the forums for a bit. Great information, with tons of good stuff!

I want to ask about my setup to make sure that I am all set with everything I have and am not missing out on quality as far as picture, sound, etc.

It is a smaller tv size, as this is only a setup in my personal bedroom. I don't need a large television or extremely powerful sound system, etc.

Basically, my setup is this:

32" Magnavox LCD 720p HDTV Model: 32MF338B/27.
Sony BDP-S300 Blu-ray player
RCA Receiver and 5.1 Dolby Digital Surround

I have the blu-ray player connected to the television via HDMI (gold plated connector), and then have the blu-ray player connected to my receiver and home theater system via optical connection. So, I basically mute the television and use my home theater for the sound.

Basically, my television is only capable of 1080i at its highest (when I switch by Xbox 360 to 1080p, it wont display it on the screen of my tv). The blu-ray looks great, but I want to make sure I am getting the best picture possible. If it would benefit me to spend a little bit more to get a 1080p television, I would do such. Is it going to make a difference?

Lastly, I was told that for a smaller television, such as mine (32"), I should not worry about 1080i vs. 1080p. True?

Thank you all for taking the time to read this, and answer my questions!

I think you're fine with what you've got @ that screen size.

Not sure what setting your 360/BD are at, but they should both be set to 720p, the native resolution of your television.

If you are outputting a 1080i signal then the BD player is converting from 1080p to 1080i, then the TV is converting from 1080i to 720p.

Yeah you're only gonna get 720 out of a 720 tv but it sounds like a great setup .In a small room it probably just rocks.

Thanks a lot for the information so far everyone!

I am not sure what my blu-ray player is set at. I believe I have it set at 1080i, and the television just is set to auto and automatically adjusts to the signal (I think, excuse my ignorance here.) My digital cable box broadcasts in 480i that the tv auto adjusts to when I watch that.

With my blu-ray, whenever I hit the info button on my televisions remote, it comes up and says: 1080i, 16:9, hd.

With my Xbox360 I have it set to 1080i, and it shows up when I hit info with the remote to also say 1080i, 16:9, HD.

So, should I look to find and change a setting somewhere on either my Xbox360 or my Blu-Ray or tv?

What I am gathering here is I want to set all of them to watch at 720 instead of the 1080i?

And thanks again to all of you!

(Vaca, whats BD = blu-ray device?)

(Just bought 300, V for Vendetta, and the Simpsons Movie! Looking forward to seeing them on blu-ray!)

Odds are your set will still have to scale a 720p signal, so you might as well leave it at 1080i.
