Default PS3 sound down-converting

I just got a PS3. I have an RCA home theater reciever that's 7 years old. It only has Dolby Digital.

So I'm good for any Blu-Ray that has a Dolby Digital track, but for the ones that only have High Res audio tracks, like The Simpsons Movie, it only downconverts the sound to 2 channel PCM. Not to Dolby Digital 5.1.
What I wanna know is if there's a way to get the High Res tracks to downconvert to Dolby Digital instead. I've tried playing with the Sound Settings, but there's no way to disable the "Linear PCM 2 Ch." outputs... What I want is for it to always downconvert to "Dolby Digital 5.1 Ch."
Is there anyway to do that? Cuz right now I don't how to do it, or if it's even possible.

And if it isn't, I suggest Sony takes care of that in a firmware upgrade soon.

Are you running the audio to your receiver over Toslink?

Ah, right. Forgot to mention what the connection was.
I'm using the optical output. My receiver doesn't have HDMI.
And I'm not sure what Toslink is. If you mean the composite connector thingy, then no.

Toslink is optical. It almost sounds like you don't have your audio set up in the PS3 menu correctly. Let me turn mine on and go through it to see if you've gone through the same menu setup.

It should be set up correctly if you went to the Sound settings menu and changed the Audio Output Settings to Digital Out (Optical) with both DTS and Dolby Digital selected.

My receiver only has Dolby Digital. Not DTS.

The problem is the two 2 CH. outputs that are there, but not selectable or unselectable. They're the 4th and 7th ones. They aren't highlighted, so I can't turn them off.
So when I put on a Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD or Uncompressed PCM track... for some reason, the PS3 outputs it in 2 CH... not 5.1.

What I want is to be able to unselect those two 2 CH. outputs, and have ONLY Dolby Digital 5.1 selected, so that everything gets outputted in Dolby Digital 5.1.

I'm guessing this isn't possible?

It's not possible. Mine has those grayed out as well.

I suggest Sony makes them unselectable in a firmware upgrade then. Maybe I shall send them an email.

Unfortunately there is no way (nor will there likely ever be) for any player to convert DTS to Dolby Digital. A lot of people have complained about this very issue since Fox's first BD release and nothing can be done about it due to rights issues and complicated coding algorithms. Sorry to say but you'll be stuck with 2ch PCM on DTS HD soundtracks unless you upgrade...

Oi... that's bad news. I suppose I shall start saving up for a new receiver.

Thanks anyway.

Yeah I was complaining about that from day 1. ALL FOX and New Line titles use DTS. Defenetly look into upgrading to a receiver that has internal TrueHD and DTS-HD decoding. Even though the PS3 cannot output bitstreams for the next gen formats, its still good to have it on your next purchase for true future proof.

Actually, with firmware upgrade 2.30 or later, the PS3 is capable of outputting DTS-HD MA and High Res.

I'm sure Dolby TrueHD will be included in a future firmware upgrade as well.

PS3 has been able to decode TrueHD since launch or shorty after.

Seriously dude, you can find a capable reciever for probably $100 or less these days. Personally I think you're much better off going with a reciever that has HDMI and supports LPCM via HDMI. But if you're happy with just Dolby Digital and DTS then yeah, it's not gonna hurt your wallet too much.

Ah. Cool. I thought it probably did, but I couldn't find anything about TrueHD on the Wikipedia page, and everybody always says that the PS3 can't decode high res audio, so I figured TrueHD was still on the way.
What about Uncompressed PCM?

Yeah, I know I could just go with a receiver that can decode DTS, but if I am gonna buy a new receiver, I'd like to go the full hog and just get one that has everything. I know they're upwards of like $700.
