Default I have a problem with my PS3 Blu Ray audio

Let me explain my set up. I have my PS3 outputting audio through an optical audio cable, into an optical switch, which subsequently leads to my receiver. I have a 5.1 surround sound system.

I was recently watching The Bucket List. Outputted 5.1 surround sound perfectly. However, as soon as I pop in 27 Dresses, through bitstream, it does not output ANYTHING. Well, that's wrong. The trailers before and the title screen output 5.1, but when I start watching the movie, nothing. Except, when I fastforward 1.5x, in which case it does output the sound. What's the problem here and what am I doing wrong?

You know what the main problem is? You went to watch 27 Dresses...

Seriously though, I wish I could help but I use strictly HDMI out from my player which isn't a PS3, and I'm not accessing the "downrezed" legacy codecs like Dolby Digital which is what happens when you are using optical or coax out from units like the PS3 -- in order to access the high resolution codecs, you need to be running either analog or HDMI out.

Are you happy with just standard Dolby and/or DTS from running the system with coax/optical out? As for the problem with the audio shutting down, I don't know; could be that the disc won't output the soundtrack unless you pass the track that's on the disc as is without "accessing" its "hidden" imbedded Dolby Digital stream...

Believe me, I wish I could run my audio through HDMI, but my setup is so complicated that it's impossible with hundreds of dollars of extra equipment.

I suppose your receiver isn't HDMI 1.3a ready -- does it at least accept HDMI audio for multichannel?

You don't really have to spend all that much on equipment like you think -- the Onkyo TX-SR605, like I own (the new replacement model is dubbed the 606) was only $500 list -- I paid less on sale at a store. It provides HDMI inputs and one output at the 1.3a specification which means it can accept the new codecs on these new discs and process/decode them.

Change the settings in the PS3 from bitstream. For more details, check out ps3 thread on avsforum.com
