There is a 3D working group that is working out the best way to bring 3D into the home. http://www.3dathome.org/index.html They will have to sort out how to bring together Blu-ray, display technology and 3D technology to provide teh best user experience at reasonable cost.

The most likely add-on technology for full color 3D ("real 3d") involves a 120 Hz display and shutter glasses to alternately block the left and right eye every 1/60 second. Currently 120Hz DLP sets are mentioned, but I don't know why plasma or LCD sets couldn't be used as long at they have a 120Hz refresh rate without ghosting.

I work in the aerial imaging industry where we use 3D technology all the time. We currently use CRT displays exclusively, but 3D capable LCD screens are starting to become available.

There is also glasses-free 3D technology from Sharp, used in their Actius laptops. http://reviews.cnet.com/laptops/shar...-30573410.html They could certainly make HDTV displays with the same technology, but the drawback is that you have to sit in a sweet spot a certain distance from the screen to get the best 3D effect.

In the mean time we will see movies released with anaglyph 3D, which is real 3D, but with distorted (red-blue) colors used to provide the 3D information. I think it's a plus as long as they also provide a 2D version of the movie so you can see it in true color also.

I used to love walking over to the alfred hitchock attraction at universal orlando while on my lunch break while i was working full time as a skipper at the JAWS attraction.
The 3D sequence they would show from Dial M for murder looked incredible, I would love to see the entire movie converted over from the original 3D into Real D.
those of you who never had the pleasure of taking part of that attraction at universal orlando before, it was turned into the shrek 4D attraction about 7 mins of Dial M for murder was presented in its original 3D (viewed with polarized glasses) in 70mm and it looked absolutely stunning.
Its ashame Hitchcock got booted out for Shrek, but thats for another discussion on different website lol

I agree with the person who said they might try to seriously bring 3D into the home. HDTVs are much bigger now and I think families really are upgrading their living room home theater (I sense it more these past couple years than ever before)

Now I understand it will never hold a candle to the expensive technology of the Disney 3D and Dreamworks 3D, but just because you bring some nice 3D into the home does not mean people will no longer go to the theaters. A lot of home theater speakers I've heard almost rival (and in some cases surpass) the movie theaters, but that isn't stopping me or millions of fans from going to the movies and seeing The Dark Knight and Transformers 2 in the movie theaters with a packed audience.

there is 3d now, but not in the sense you think. The 120hz refresh rate on the new Sony and Samsung tvs make everything look real in the sense of depth. Some people think it makes things look fake but I think it makes them as real as it gets. It is actually 3d but inside the tv, not outside like Imax 3d. If you see it in person you would see what I mean. I have a 42" Philips 120hz and it is the best thing I ever bought besides my PS3. The images look spatially aranged like in real life Once you see it,you'll see that all the other tvs look flat. But you must be watching a blu-ray to see the effect.
