Does the dual player have the Realta chip? If so then I can totally understand why they would cancel this player. If not, then this definitely blows.

No, the dual format player has the Reon chip, but the Reon was the chip that would have been in the 2400 as well. The Reon chip is also in the 1200, so the upconversion will be on par with that one.

I think the Denon and Marantz players are the only ones that will have the Realta chip.

Since you mentioned the dual player, I also suspected that's why they canceled the 2400, so they could push their dual format player. They were probably thinking that the 2400 would cannibalize sales of the dual player.

Yeah I am tentatively planning on getting the Samsung as my bd player. That way I'll also get another HD player as well. The Samsung player sounds pretty good to me from what I've read, and I really want a player with this chip for upscaling my sd dvds.

I got an email from our buying group that confirmed the BDP-2400 orders were canceled. We hadn't ordered any, but they sent it out to all members.

it is also very likely that they were not going to make the 10.31.07 release and now have to make sure the players are 1.1 compliant

Is anyone considering the idea that they are going to drop HD Movies altogether? or perhaps going to HD DVD because of delays? I'm not saying for sure, but I think there's a possibility.

More than that I agree with the idea that it'd kill there standalone sales. Hopefully they'll cancel all their single format players. Perhaps even come out with an inexpensive entry level player around the $699 mark. Imagine what that would do to standalone sales. I think once they get to that mark (dual format players) Most other camps will jump on the dual bandwagon and we'll see a big change in disc sales. Who knows.

Other peoples thoughts?

They DID say higher-end model right? Meaning $800+ (how many were ready for that one but the minority HD crowd?) I still say if you're going super high-end or planning to, go for the Pioneer Elite models... in quality anything else just tries to keep up.

Now I know why it wasn't showing up when I asked several retailers...the BD-P1400 and U5000 are listed.

i definitely disagree - three bd standalone models released so far from samsung and they're quite quick to promote the fact they were first to market

the dual format player stems from them being in the 51% Toshiba owned TSST and they are keeping relationships good there by doing this

they know hddvd is not the way forward and with only 3% of the market being dual format players, neither is that an alternative

they will have another standalone bd player announced before ces 2008

I thought the deadline was based on being announced before the deadline -- not necessaril released fro the deadline. At any rate, I mostly agree with dropping the 2400. I really don't see the purpose of flooding the market with BD players that don't meet the final specs. I can see each company releasing one 1.1 player each, but I really don't think we need a base 1.1 player and a high-end 1.1 player from each company. BD CE manufacturers should generally be trying to compete in price with Toshiba at this point, not releasing expensive players that aren't final spec.

The player has to be released not announced before the deadline.
