Default Magnavox $128 @ Walmart...

I was in Walmart last night and the Magnavox blu-ray player is still selling at $128, they had a stack of about 20 on the shelf.

Maybe they aren't selling as well as Walmart hoped. I remember when I picked mine up on the last black friday it was a madhouse.

The one I bought has operated perfectly, playing every disc I've bought or rented without issue.

Yep, panama city has them too.

People were saying that whoever wanted one would have to hurry becasue they sell out like they did on black Friday. I will give credit to wally world for keeping the price on sale.

Surprising that they are not selling better. But perhaps some of the people who would have bought one were scared off by the HD DVD players they bought only to see that format sent to the back of the bus a few months later.

Magnavox isn't the greatest brand in the world either....at least I don't trust it for something like a TV or DVD player. Freddy

It seems to me that Magnavox used to be strictly Philips CE equipment, which was usually pretty decent stuff. But these days, I think it could be most anything.

The brand name may be a problem, but the heart of the problem is that people have higher expectations and that there are plenty of sub $199 players out there.

People are excited by the Vizio blu player, good for them, but the $188 price barrier had already been breached at wal-mart and sams club.

I do think that people are expecting better name brands to show up. Or maybe I got it all wrong and nobody in the general public cares about brand names , maybe its all down to price, maybe they expect to be given the player and some movies.

The $188 Vizio will be a Walmart exclusive actually.

Same situation at my north Texas location (Mesquite)...there was very little movement in the first week of the sale, which makes me wonder how well the brand names are doing at the higher price-points.

Yeah, but its not bad to mention it again since the sale is still on.

Vizio is a timed exclusive as I understand it. Don't know haven't kept up on it. Either way it is not breaking new ground, it may end up being a better player, but the price and features are already available. Now the Vizio at $128 or $98 that might be news.

I can't help but have an early feeling that Black Friday will be especially fantastic for blu-ray players and discs. If there's a $128 player now, we should see a $99 one on Black Friday for sure.

I too also noticed a huge stack of these player's at my local Wal-Mart. Definitly didn't seem to be moving much.
Also noticed that they have pulled all blu-ray movies except for a small endcap of new releases and $10 Liongate title's. Really makes me wonder how poorly blu-ray is truly performing. Wal-Mart is all about making as much money as they can and would sell their own mother's if they thought they could turn a profit. I will keep my eye open but it look's like their getting ready to dump the format. Not a good sign.
On a more positive note I was able to pick up Star Trek season one on hd dvd for $50 buck's. Maybe since blu-ray is doing so badly they will bring in some more hd dvd's like some people have been seing in Canada. I would be a happy camper then.

I think it's regional because my walmart has actually expanded their blu-ray exposure by making a whole aisle blu-ray movies then the other side all hardware.

The magnavoxes are sold out at my location. Actually, I never saw any anytime, there's the possibility they never got a shipment, but I do remember them putting some players on palate in the aisle prior to the sale about 3 weeks ago but I don't think it was the magnavox.

I think so. This is a make or break year for Blu-ray (or at least many companies are considering it so), tough times don't help, but the player prices we are seeing in the summer time and the dropping prices for the movies I think we will see a serious push this Black Friday, $99 at least, probably a few place will be cheaper -maybe only with bundles though. Who knows if the $99 players will be "name brands" I don't think it will matter in the end if the price is right.

Isn't the magnavox more or less a Philips?

Wal-mart is playing this weird, in 2007 their big deal was uniformity in their stores, now it is a mixed bag of who gets what. In our area Blu has been scaled back too, actually it is a bit bigger, from around the Mississippi gulf coast to Panama city, not that great a distance really. Basically along the I10.

Probably not the most robust economic area, and I suspect the a lot of light fingers too, as well as shady returns all probably play a factor.
